Blue still in Maf's shop - RMS advice
« on: June 19, 2013, 09:07:31 PM »

Maf has replaced the RMS with a crown one sent to me from the states, but no joy.

Been playing at Bush Farm Sunday before last.

Still pissing oil if not worse than before.

Have now ordered original Mopar seal. Read on several US sites that crown seal is crap.

Maf also said that in his opinion engine is 'breathing' heavily (age, worn piston rings, worn everything basically), hence build up of pressure, and pushing oil out.

According to his theory no matter what seal you put in (even gold plated) it will not hold the oil in.

He is contemplating a pressure relief tube 'gizmo' from the bottom of the engine upwards with an air filter thingy on the top.

Far from me to doubt his judgement but does his reasoning make sense ?

Got to get the thing sorted in time for IOW Bonanza

You should already have a crank case vent in the rocker cover. If it has a PCV valve installed I would remove that first to see if anything improves.

Well dutch delk is correct there is or should be a pcv valve in the rocker  I personly did not think that engine was a very high miler  so you need to be certain how bad its breathing is
Re the seal I never had great results fitting them in situe so that it self can be a problem

If you decide to spend cash on a 258 take time to really thinkk what you are spending on .........if you went v8 running costs would not be much changed with a manual cj7

Its all about where you want to end up really

A 4.0 transplant is easy to install and you could end up with a good fuel injection system with just a little bit work work. Not as much flash as a V8 but it is a vast improvement over the 4.2 and the fuel injection alone is well worth it.

Dont weight the old one in until you have removed and sent the crankshaft my way.

Thanks Kev.  Very helpful. You are right only done 120K so far from the 300K that these engines are allegedly capable of.

As for transplants and stuff ........ not ready for that yet a) financially, would have to buy the lump b) practically, would have to pay somebody to do it.

Mrs. Dutch would have a friggin' fit if I only suggested such a thing......and then hang me by my balls before she cut them orf.

Just want to run the darn thing as problem free as can be.  If that's with a little oil loss, as I have done, so be it.

Will talk to Doc Maf.

Dutch
been there done that with an mk2 Zodiac
100 litre of petrol to 1 litre of oil
used to pour out of the rear crank shaft oil seal - ended up with a new sump (it was ever so slightly bent)
this is all from a very bad memory and is 30+ years ago
you have to make it
