I had to drop the fuel tank out of the CJ7 to replace the tank skid plate, I took off the feed and return pipes where the sender unit is.
There were 2 more smaller pipes on the side of the tank at the top, I followed them up and they go up into the rear wheel arch to what looks like a round bowl thingy with the pipes entering the bottom and a another pipe coming out of the top that's about 6 inches long with a bung in the end..... 

What is this round thingy and what does it do ??

I will be taking the tank out again to replace it with a polyurethane one in the next few weeks and wondered if I can do away with this round bowl thingy and just link the two outlets on the tank with a short bit of pipe.

Any help appreciated

Bowl thing is emmissions nonsense I think, took it off mine and linked the two with a bit of pipe as you suggested, been like that for at least 15 yrs

I thought it was a breather with a rollover valve the vapour vent pipes go into a liquid check valve, then one pipe comes out of the check valve and into the rollover valve then into a charcoal cannister

  The yanks don't mind burning petrol, but dont like the vapours escaping to atmosphere for some reason so they fit a sealed collection system

If you get rid of it make sure your fuel cap is a vented one so your tank can breathe.

I will just fit a short bit of hose to link the two breather pipes and get a vented cap

My CJ7 which was assembled in South Africa has all the elbows you describe on the tank but it has a large diameter inlet pipe on the rear right hand corner of the tank and a smaller pipe about 5/8" Dia at the top corner of the tank with a rubber hose running up the filler pipe and then teeing into it about 4" away from the end. As said before you will need a vented fuel cap but dont try any steep climbs if you dont want fuel just leaking out the back of the vehicle, its expensive, messy, dangerous and the wildlife dont like it! My jeep has an aversion to deep water anyway but not sure if vented fuel caps wont let water in the tank whilst fording.
My bastard also takes ages to fill with this set up, it interferes with the back pressure effort on petrol pumps so the first time you know its full is when fuel is running down the paintwork! That said my filler is at the back of the vehicle under the right hand light and Ive not seen many others like it either so if yours is side mounted up high you may be Ok.

Mine is exactly the same as yours. 2 pipes on the filler one large inlet and another that goes onto the tank and T's onto the larger pipe. My filler is under the rear right hand light also.

I don't take her off road so no danger of filling the tank with water or even worse spilling liquid gold out. Interesting to hear about the problems with filling up. I suppose those handles at the pumps sense the pressure change and that's what makes them click off. Just done a flea bay search and saw some in line tank breathers so may put two lengths of pipe on with these one way breathers in both. I would leave the bowl thingy on but every pipe that comes off it is shot and breaking down.

When I took the tank out it didn't look like any fuel had been through these pips for a while as they were brittle and cracking.

Will try linking them out with a vented fuel cap and see how it goes

Sounds like a good plan to me.
That or just block em off with those caps they put on diesel spill pipes, that was how mine was from build.
