Electric fuel pumps
« on: July 18, 2013, 10:21:17 AM »

Is anyone using one on their V8? Mine takes ages to start if it is left for any more than a week. Was thinking of ditching it for an electric one as it would self prime as soon as the key is turned. I do have a new mechanical pump I brought a while back but never installed it as the pump still works. Opinions

There was one fitted on mine when I bought it. It sits on the inner wing by the carb. It has a filter fitted just before the pump also. It works on a seperate switch which could be hidden as a measure to stop theft. Make sure if its on a switch to shut it off each time. Have returned to mine a few times to a flat battery  :icon_redface:
It starts pretty much straight away every time but I am not convinced that its the right one as I do get a smell of fuel in the exhaust. Might be making it run a bit rich.
I am looking at going the efi route on mine which uses a pump at the tank end and feeds the efi as much fuel as it needs. I think it's called an on demand system.

If your going to go for the pump its worth checking what psi the carb needs and can handle and get the carb set up right.

Hope that helps

Alternatively get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and install it between the carb and whichever pump comes last on your rig. Set the max pressure per the manual and enjoy!

you sure its pump related? the carb float chamber should hold sufficient to start.

Thats a good point!
Wonder if its running hot and flashing off the fuel from the float chamber, or if the float is a bit sad and has sunk. Sounds wierd I know, but a pinhole in my float had me chasing my tail for ages.

I had thought the same thing, as there should always be fuel in the carb bowl. It does have the raiser plate underthe carb to prevent heat soak so I'm not sure where it goes or what happens. All I know is if I leave it for more than a week it's a pig to start. The carb has had a full rebuild also and nothing strange was found during that time. Might post the same question on the US forums and see what they suggest.

sounds odd I know but try giving the carb a rap had a bike with a sticking float wouldn't run till you hit it

Apparently very common in the US. Most have changed to electric pumps or fluid down the carb before starting.

Sorry guys, I remember what causes this.
Problem is leaking valves within the fuel pump. As pump gets worn the valves allow fuel to pass back through the system into the tank, then when you go to start all youve got is vapour in the fuel lines and as we all know these pumps just hate to prime themselves, the next step is a flat battery.
Remedy by installing a quarter turn fuel shut off tap in a suitable spot, hidden or not is your choice, position doesnt matter either. Just so long as the installation is fuel and air tight it will prevent fuel returning to the tank during the week and as long as you remember to turn it on again you should keep smiling. This costs less than a new pump or even a can of Start-ya-Bastard and can act as an anti theft measure too.
Hope this sorts it.

Oops, another cause is cracked flexible fuel lines again letting air into the system and letting the fuel flow back to the tank over an extended period. Check/change any fuel hoses as your first step but I would still suggest installing a hidden tap or solenoid valve ready for when the pump starts failing or when some pikey takes a fancy to your rig!

Lines are new, so not that. Probably the carb. Will look into a valve or might just change to electric
