Hi, im a complete newb to both Jeeps and this forum.

Heralding form Bristol, im a convertee from landrover/ range rovers...

Im looking to get a project vehicle for 50/50 on road and off/ green laning..

So, im looking for some recommendations from Jeep owners, i like the looks and specs of the WJ Grand Cherokee and to be fair that is about the size i need for family and the monster dog. Having also researched them, they seem reliable and pretty simple to sort out, although coming from Range Rovers eveything is!!!

Having done some youtubing, searching and reading myself. Which engine would people recommend, vehicle will be doing relatively low miles and im happy to run lpg. Im also competent at fixing vehicles so will be happy to keep it sweet. I like the idea of the V8, love the sound, but open to experience from owners.

To give a further help for advice i plan too:
Lift it, maybe the Rough country lift finance will tell
Snorkel so i can play in water if i get a chance
Larger tyres for some mud play on the plain

Thanks for any advice help, an if anyone is local to bristol and has a vehicle i could look around that would be most helpful.

Depeneds on your budget.......

And do you want LPG or is it just an offroad weekend fun machine.......

Avoid V8 ......nice but fragile and head injector type probs doesn't like LPG.......you'll see threads here from members with probs.....

If ya go old get a 4 litre ZJ Grand....... Anvil of an engine last for longer than the body
cheap puck lift bit of trimming and some 31 MUDs.......and go for it....... See if you like it before throwing more wedge at it.
ZJ can be had for £500 upwards.......just sold mine with cill mods and bits for £700 owner loves it so they are around......
Other models further up the money tree are available........just means you will feel more careful offroad........ And we don't want that

Budget wise, I was looking at a good lowish mile WJ V8 preferably with LPG. I was assuming couple of K for a truck, maybe more if it had LPG or a LPG setup at i guess a couple of K again.

Hadnt really considered the I6, guess i keep fantasising about the V8 burble.... Can the I6 be made to sound nice, would like a fun exhaust note after the doozel rangie.. But dont wanna sound like a corse in mcdonalds....

Are the earlier models as large as the WJ??? I have no issue with the early ones.

Vehicle will be weekend, but to also pull our trailer camper and do the longish (156mile each way) trip home occasionally loaded up.

where abouts are you in Briz? I'm in kingswood.

I run a ZJ as well as 2 CJs all I have done to the ZJ is an exhaust (I like the sound to be right too) and some A/Ts

but not sure why you want a snorkel, spend the money on extended breather tubes and waterproofing the electronics, there aint that much deep water round here

Regarding snorkel, i was under the mis/understanding that the air intake was quite low on the Jeep and near the front.. Potentially looking at some play on the plain, an have seen alot of pics of large vehicles dipping the nose somewhat so didnt want to drown the poor beast..

To be honest the jeeps are all new to me an im constantly learning, but have always been impressed with their capabilities.

Im also a constant meddler/ tinkerer so will be wanting to play with the poor vehicle alot...

My ex ZJ is up for sale, the guy that bought it from me contacted me last week asking if I wanted it back, thats running rough country x-flex arms & shocks, BFG muds on modulars, snorkel, rock sliders etc etc new MOT freshly serviced & certified lpg & had SH*T loads spent on it, he wants a grand for it to shift it quick if your interested?

Are wj's that much trouble?? Having owned a rangie p38 I think anything will be more reliable!!

I had a 2002 WJ which I used for green laning and as a day ride. I got it muddy and used it for wading in standard trim. I'd suggest a 2.7 CRD and mod as you go. I only got as far a skid plates before I sold it.

The reason I waffling on is that with the gearbox / drive system it's pretty awesome where you think you may struggle. I beat a couple of land rovers hands down on the n York moors and you may find you want to prioritise what you change as you go ( unless you're loads dog course lol) as your a comvertee.

I found llama very helpful when I was working out the lift on it.
