I'm fortunate enough not to have had any fault codes need analysing on my wk, but ever the cynic I'm preparing for the day !!!

A could of questions that your collective experiences can help put my mind at rest........

Does the actual code pop up on the in car info panel ? Ie it'll give me the code for diagnosis and I don't need a plug in reader ?

If I do need a reader, what protocol do I look for ? What's a good make/features to look for ?

I'm a bit of a gadget man but with a practical edge. Are there any readers, diagnostic bits and pieces that plug info the vehicle ( perhaps via the OBD) that will realistically help DIY service and fault diagnosis

The available range is mind boggling.

Codes don't show on the info panel. A simple OBDII reader can read the code numbers if there are any present. I use a basic ELM 327 bluetooth module from ebay with a couple of free android apps - dashcommand and torque. It will also monitor temperatures, revs and other basic stuff but to access the more complex stuff and to make any changes it needs the Jeep star scan setup from the correct era. I tried using a DRB scan tool that can access everything on a WJ (well Daggie did - thanks  ) but it wouldn't have anything to do with the WK.

Ditto, I use the the same basic ELM 327.Works on the ZJ and the WG, resets the fault codes. Enough for my needs (at the moment  )

Does the key trick (within five seconds, and without starting the engine, turn key on-off-on-off-on) not work on WKs to display codes in the odometer? I've heard that some later Jeeps need to go to on five times rather than three.

I've managed to get one of the plug in wireless units, any recomended software ?

Sensor arrived and working nicely. Set up a bit of a pain but ok .

I'm using OBD scanner free software and its excellent. Already diagnosed and rest one code
