XJ alarm thingy
« on: September 08, 2013, 06:46:41 PM »

Just got m'hands on a '96 XJ (woohoo!) and all seems fine with the car. It has an alarm system fitted which I have no idea about. This is also working fine. There is a small unit on the dash which is about half inch by 2-3 inches in size. This has a red led with the word 'panic' next to it and a green led with 'valet' next to it. Apparently this is something to do with the alarm system. It has a Chrysler logo on it so guessing it's Jeep equipment. The fob has 2 buttons which lock and unlock doors as normal. The issue is this. Once the car is unlocked and the doors have been closed the alarm will passively reactivate, hooting like a son of a bitch when you open the door. It's a pain in the arse as you may imagine. So, my questions are: is anyone familiar with this system? If so, does anyone know if the passive arming can be disabled? Does anyone know what the thingy on the dashboard is/does?
I have literally scoured the owners manual and there is no mention whatsoever of any security system.

I have no idea about your specific alarm, however have had experience of others. I would assume there is some way you can put the alarm in "valet mode", which should mean the alarm doesn't passively arm whilst you fanny around doing whatever. I had the same feature on a Cobra (I think) alarm on a previous vehicle. To enable valet mode you would have to press and hold two buttons at the same time for a few seconds until the alarm LED stayed on continually (may also have had an audible alert - I'm getting old and cannot remember). It also had a capability of manually sounding the alarm - this could be your "panic mode" - This was done by holding down a further two buttons on the alarm fob (it had four buttons in all).

Now, if I were you I would either 1) leave it the fuck alone, or 2) play with different button press combinations and lengths, and see what happens.

Sorry if I have wasted your time and none of this is true :)

Another thought - could you post pictures of the fob and dash light thingy?

If you disarm it and then press the valet button the green led will stay lit and the alarm will not rearm. You can lock and unlock with fob but the alarm stays off. Also there should be a small round black push button under the dash to the left of the steering column,  this disarms the system with out the keyfob. My old xj had same system.
Hope that helps.

Good answers guys, between the two of you I think I have enough info to shut it the fuck up.
