Front axle CV Joint 98ZJ Grand
« on: September 28, 2013, 02:36:04 PM »

Vehicle is a  98ZJ .I heard something go on the front while I was attempting a climb off road.Driving afterwards it felt as if  I had no 4wd.I came off and could not  see anything but driving home had a few more creaks and grunts than normal.
I checked the front n/s and the drive shaft was loose. The cv boot was torn and I opened it up and everything inside is in bits.
Am I correct in assuming this is the axleshaft CV joint that is goosed and I will need to replace? Is this a job I can do myself or are there any special tools needed?

it's easy to swap out the shafts
u need a 36mm for the hub nut and a 1/2" af 12 point socket for hubs
swap the shafts for xj ones with U j's there stronger

Thanks for the reply .
Are the XJ ones easy to find? Sorry if this is a stupid question, is that a full swap over to the XJ shafts ie shafts and joints and am I ok just swapping the one side now or should I do both??

get an old axle off a 97-on xj
and pull the shafts out

But

If your off roading it then swapping a XJ prop and axle complete on the front of your ZJ is a good thing to do as it's high pinion and
check you get the right ratios as they are 3.55 or 3.73 on a zj's or xj's
