I am going to change all the fluids on the TJ I have bought. It has the 231 case.From looking around it has ATF+3 or +4 recommended.Where can I buy this as I can not find any except for Mopar ?

I thought it was Dexron in these boxes? Cheaper and easier to get hold of.

Dexron is fine, and much more cost effective if you intend making regular oil changes.

Is it better to do more frequent changes rather than using higher priced (possible quality) oil? I should imagine when used off road it would be better doing more frequent changes.

After any froading, I'll change the diff oil as a matter of course, but I'll change the TC once maybe twice a year.

For the sake of a 10 minute job and two litres of diff oil, it's worth it. And don't judge everyone by your standards BD, as I am quite capable of that job

The 231 transfer case can use any ATF. The reason different specs are found is that Jeep list whatever ATF is used in the auto transmissions for that year. It saves owners with autos having to buy different types of fluids, and reduces the chance that the wrong fluid could be put in the transmissions which can be fussy about what fluid is used.

Sounds like I can use the ATF I have for the ZJ  without any problems.
That will save me messing about with different types of fluid.
I am taking the TJ off road today for the first time and when back will change all the fluids.

I change mine 3-4 times a year, which works out at a change per 1-3 events depending on how active I am at getting out to events. Buying it in 5 litre containers and not getting anything too fancy makes it fairly cheap. I need about 3 litres per change which is about £75 a year compared to at least £2k in diff parts / rebuild cost if they get knackered from running on mud instead of oil. I do the transfer case oil less, maybe once a year because it get contaminated less and I doo hardly any miles now because of trailering it everywhere.

It can make a big difference though actually getting the info from someone who has actually done the maintenance.
Finding the balance between wasting money and good maintenance is not as easy as it sounds.
I enjoy doing the maintenance part on my own vehicles but don't like wasting money on unnecessary work.( work too hard for my money)

The rear diff on the TJ has a Detroit Truetrac Limited Slip Differential do I need to add the LSD mopar additive when changing rear diff oil?

Only think the factory LSDs need friction modifier / additive!

All others will run on normal diff oil.

Unless???     others will be along soon I have no doubt!

  Tis what a wise Bubba has always told me, got True Tracs front & rear in ours.
