Axles with Drive Disconnects
« on: December 15, 2013, 12:20:00 AM »

Could you guys tell me which Jeeps / axles have drive disconnects on? I'm thinking they might be useful for something... but I have no idea which ones have them?

One of the last model FSJs had left drop axle disconnect I believe.
Also on Dodge ram same type of system.......

Normally a weak link and disliked by the majority :icon_super:

Yukon and spyntec do front axle hub disconnect kits for wrangler axles but they're not cheap to buy or ship. If you aren't sure what use you'd have (and they DONT save fuel!) for them then you don't want to spend £1k plus on them! Or do you?

Sorry to be a little more clean I'm talking about the axles with a split driveshaft and a disconnect system so when it's open the diff doesn't spin.

For what reason do people dislike them? Weak? Unreliable connect/disconnect? Added complexity? Mitsubishi's run a similar system on the front diffs but they seem to be closer to the diff meaning extracting just that bit could be more difficult.

The reason I'm asking is I'm trying to come up with a way of effectively disconnecting my front and/or rear props on my trialler. The reason for this is to allow me to disconnect one end, independently brake that end and spin the truck around the axle, then reconnect the prop.

I'm also looking into fitting a locking diff but with it being a prelude diff it's not really something people make. The added problem with doing it like this is by braking one end the other will spin twice the speed. With torque already an issue I don't think I'd have enough power to spin the 39" tyres with half the gearing.

If anyone has any close up's of a disconnect system that they could post up that would be greatly appreciated to!

Thought that would be what you were after. Its most often done at the transfer case so atlas or similar, dana 300 twin stick, suzuki rock lobster twin stick (i think) or maybe np231 with terra2low for just low rear wheel drive. Don't know of a way to do it at the axle end.

Donk is right ...... Twin stick your transfer case and fiddle brakes for each wheel will make it dance to your chosen tune.

That's correct Donk. The YJ isn't getting this treatment for now. I'm only toying with it for the Screamer atm.

The difficulty I have is it's a Honda Prelude gearbox in the middle, no transfer box. No selectable 4WD. Some of the guys in the bigger trucks running Xfer boxes have as you've already suggested. Unfortunately that's not an option for me.

I need to make something to put into the props really. As normal disconnects are in the actual driveshaft, they should be under less strain doing the same job to the prop - if strength is a problem that is?

The YJ system was unreliable mainly due to the vacuum system, but you can convert them to cable operation.

If you were to be very abusive to the prelude box would it not work with a fiddle brake on each prop? Crude and not much good for the gearbox but ts all i've got at the moment.

And having reread your previous post, no that won't work.

The prelude diff is welded solid to give 100% drive to the front and rear axles. I need to disconnect drive completely to brake a whole axle.

Don't know of anything that will do that. Some kind of home made dog clutch on the prop would do it. But wouldn't be smooth. Would it be better to modify/change the welded prelude diff to give you front/rear or both? Not got any ideas on that though!

Must be something in the tractor world that will do what you need? Know of nothing fitted to standred vehicles.
