A cautionary tale!

For anybody out there running non-Jeep steel wheels on a Jeep with drum brakes beware of the problem that has just bitten me in the bum.  My steel wheel centre face profile (where it meets the drum) was not flat and when the wheel nuts were tightened up the face was forced against the balancing weight distorting the wheel.  As I rotate my tyres to keep an even wear all 5 are distorted.  This is causing vibration when I am driving along.  The main reason this has become apparent now is that I have just replaced all the control arms bushes and the axle is tight again and not slopping round which masked the wheel wobble.

So I now have a new set of wheels on order, but have decided to go for Beadlocks as they look the mutts and enable airing down to a very low pressure :D

woody i can recommend these very strong hard core....


as you can see the locking ring is not to big.......so easy to clean the mud from...

Sure I've read somewhere that beadlocks are illegal on the road in the UK

Have already asked this question and been told split rims (beadlocks) are legal.

Be careful.  A split rim and a beadlock ain't the same thing. :wink:

this is a split rim wheel from rock monster.......

the only problem is that you can not get custom back spacing or i would have bought them......
trailready are my second choice and in america are not "dot" approved.....but are a fantastic wheel and has proved to be a good choice.
and bubba i'm running 5x5.5 hubs

That's my understanding too KD.  I know that insurance companies don't like 'em.

Spoken to the man that's supplying them who runs them, has had his Jeep pass numerous MoTs with them on, no problems, and his insurance company knows.  Also about another 3 of the Pompey Posse have been running them for a couple of years, again with no problems.

Just cos it passes an MOT doesn't mean its legal, remember. And I'm always suspicious about "the bloke that sells them says they're okay..." comments - he's going to, isn't he!?!

Defo check out your insurance first - preferably in writing - as if the worst happens it could get very expensive!

check your insurance!!

in my experience, most MOT testers wouldnt know a beadlock rim if they saw one.......

Coincidentally there's a really good write up about beadlocks in one of the sceptic mags out here, I'll bring it back and scan it in for yall. But basically they're not legal although this fella reckons the insurance company (or the police) would never know what they were looking at - I guess a problem would only arise if you killed someone and it was investigated - but this fella goes on to say how legal are your swapped out seats, aftermarket winch bumpers etc etc  :roll:
