Another boring oil question!
« on: December 29, 2013, 07:58:02 PM »

The XJ is currently running 10W-40 oil, but as it recommends 10W-30 I've decided that that is what I'd like to run it on for this change.

The trouble is, I can hardly find any 10W-30 semi-synthetic anywhere, and the stuff I can find says it's for motorbikes. Does anyone know where I can find some, and does being motorbike oil make a difference?

N.B. I'm going for semi-synth as the XJ already has a slight oil weep, so I don't want to use fully synthetic!

Use 5w30 or stick to 10w40. It is only temperature related and in the UK we do not have the extremes of temperatures that make a difference.

'Upper' oil weight are 'ranges' of viscosities at 100 degrees C, measured if centistrokes (cst).

A 30-weight oil is between 9.3 and 12.4 cst at 100C. A 40-weight oil is between 12.4 and 16.8 cst at 100C.

Often, if an engine has a lot of wear, a thicker oil will reduce oil consumption by reducing the amount of oil that can 'escape' through larger openeings, but not always.

Which then is the thicker oil the 10w40?

In the manual it just says to use different viscosities at different ambient temperatures.

In all our trucks and vans at work we use Millers 10w40, winter and summer and over the last 6 years and having covered a total in excess of a million miles have never had an engine failure or an oil related problem.

I've found some suitable oil, but it's a heavy duty diesel oil and only mentions diesel ratings. I read that diesel oils have more detergents in them than petrol oils.

Would this be fine to run in the 4.0??

no

better sticking to the 10W40 semi, remember oil specs are for new engines, I always go thicker as engine gets older, would also say use cheap oil but change more often

My i6 is using 10w40 with 240k odd on the clock with no oil burning issues, the number after the w is the viscosity when hot, before when its cold, higher number means thicker. Stick with the 10w40 it currently has

Okayyyy, I did this last time I bought oil for the Jeep...  I spent days convinced that I was going to get 10W30, and that I would buy the perfect oil etc etc, then eventually said "oh what the hell", settled and bought 10W40  :lol_hitting:

I've just bought some Valvoline Maxlife 10W40 :003:

Cheers for the help guys 8-)

The "W" stands for winter,  the two values represent the  oil viscosity at cold and normal operating temperatures, the ideal oil will remain at the same viscosity across all temperatures. the trouble with mineral or semi synth is that they get thinner the higher the temps are, where  as the fully synthetic should be less affected by the change in temp.

i usually go for the fully synth you can get it for £17.00 for 5 L at europarts (if you watch out for the deals)  :peekaboo:

Advantages (copied from wiki)
The technical advantages of synthetic motor oils include:
Better low- and high-temperature viscosity performance at service temperature extremes
Better (higher) Viscosity Index (VI)
Better chemical & shear stability
Decreased evaporative loss
Resistance to oxidation, thermal breakdown, and oil sludge problems
Possibility to extended drain intervals, with the environmental benefit of less used oil waste generated
Improved fuel economy in certain engine configurations
Better lubrication during extreme cold weather starts
Possibly a longer engine life
Superior protection against "ash" and other deposit formation in engine hot spots (in particular in turbochargers and superchargers) for less oil burnoff and reduced chances of damaging oil passageway clogging.
Increased horsepower and torque due to less initial drag on engine
Improved Fuel Economy (FE) - from 1.8% to up to 5% has been documented in fleet tests

also i think where the manuals were written the fully synths were uncommon and very expensive??

Local commercial oil supplier to me, 10w 40 semi synthetic x 25 litres £40 - £45.

Try looking around for industrial / commercial suppliers  :icon_winkle:

Just go 10-40 and change often

I just use cheapest crap from local factors and a filter every time

I did the reverse to this, given the choice today this is what I would do......

in simple terms the first number give an idea on how thick the oil is (low = thin) the second is the temperature range.

10-30 oil is for general use.

ASDA are reasonable for oil

Just bought 10 liters of Shell Hellix 10w40 semi synthetic (for petrol engines) for £22 from eurocarparts delivered to the house FoC. That is second time this year I have had this deal.
I  get the Millers 10w40 from work for the CRD but it actually costs me more and we buy it in 205 liter barrels

Haha, I never venture further North than the Big Apple a.k.a. Plymouth  :icon_winkle:

Only kidding, but I've looked and the nearest one is Bristol, so I'm not that surprised I'd never discovered it! :003:

Also, oil change on the cards tomorrow - Valvoline arrived yesterday, and Mahle oil filter as recommended by Greg at 4PlayJeep arrived today, so am all good to go!
