Which Battery?
« on: January 13, 2014, 11:51:05 AM »

Does the hive mind here have any particular battery suggestions for a 98 4.0 TJ.

I was just going to get one from ATS or Halfords.
But wouldn't mind any opinions?

Snowman, dont listen to the above fuddy duddies, they still have handle bar Moustaches and listen to Country and Western....

Get a Optima Yellow Top and enjoy the hours and hours of battery goodness. However it will set you back a few quid, but will serve you well

Oh god, what have i started  :icon_biggrin:

Bollocks  :wave-fingersmiely:  :icon_biggrin:

why? they are just gel VRLA batteries, can be had cheaper for the same performance. Used to spec & order the UPS batteries on my last contract & the rep could get better spec for less.
I have had 2 red tops and they have both died in cold weather, just got a boggo lead acid with the biggest CCA for the size & they last as long and cost 1/3 of the optimas

Joking aside Snowman,

You need to tell us what you intend to use the battery for? Winching, Big spot lights, lots of short journeys etc.

There are loads to choose from and what you dont want to do is buy a battery that cant cope with deep discharge situations and shorterns the life, penny wise pound foolish as they say

Optima haven't been good for me, seem very fragile and need to be pampered.

Yep, good, and I'd get one again but I still managed to kill one. The current cheapo has survived all my abuse and was 1/3 the price - Numax from Tayna.

brand that is up to you, make your choie or follow the fashion
size, as long as it fits get the battery with the biggest CCA value. bigger the number the longer you can crank the engine over before it goes flat.

as for cold protection wrap some carpet underlay around them.

cant say I've tried a lot of batteries but if you go for the yellow top then you can get the big f***er in there if you make a new clamp. I think its the 5.5? Thats what I ended up with and seems OK so far.
