Front recovery point opinions needed
« on: January 15, 2014, 08:05:39 PM »

Evening
Having recently signed up to notts 4x4 response group I'd like to upgrade my stock front recovery point as I may be doing abit more now, just wondering if I can fit another stock recovery eye to the drivers side and heat it up and bend it so it faces inward. Want to keep it as standard as possible so maybe having 2 points maybe linked by some winch cable with a joint for a shackle :017: Or is it worth getting a beefier point fab'ed up?

The standard XJ recover points are pretty good, I put a 3T bow shackle through mine, like this one.

That one was moved when I fitted the bumper (the standard recovery point had to come off to allow thee bumper to fit.
its a snug fit, but means it don't rattle. It was strong enough to winch me out of a frozen bomb hole when I got hung up on the front diff. I still have a matching shackle on the rear point for recovery. Get a strop with snap hooks to make attaching it easy. :D

If the response group is up to speed, they'll insist any recovery gear it 'rated' so that set up will keep you sweet. :D :D

They have a minimum requirement of front and rear recovery points obviously buy no rating system, may just  continue to use the standard recovery point with a d shackle for now,

the standard recovery point on an XJ is only good when being or puling in line with the jeep, any side angle will result in a bent recover point.

the jeep oe part is only a tie down used primarily for transprotation. ideally you want more of a brace to the cahssis rail. this is normally covered in a replacement bumper with two forward shackle points

Didn't want to buy a new bumper but its a more reliable option. I saw a birty posting on here about his engineering firm making winch bumpers and rock sliders?

Did you get that CB working properly yet? Reason I'm asking is..I was listening and chatting to a UK channel this afternoon on the way home and I could hear some other folk working in amongst the 'splatter'and it sounded like an offroad group.

Although I'm not sure how often Mike comes on here any more, I have been chatting to his brother about XJ stuff.

Aaah yes Gascoigne engineering. Not yet got the cb plumbed in baz as ive been so busy but good news as I've just joined up as a member of notts 4x4 response they have tinkering days at a workshop and I suggested fitting the cb as there are lots of folk with experience and the unit to fine tune the cb. Expect it will be done around February.

You could use one of these in the mean time, if the mount holes line up with the standard recovery loop mounts. Looks close from memory. :)
