Battery has been changed after going flat a few times, had to use jump leads on occasions.

My airbag light (97 TJ) comes on a lot these days, it seems worse on cold mornings. Like yours my horn still works. Although the light will come on if power to the airbag module is lost, most likely cause is still the clockspring. I got a working one off ebay but MOTs not due till late Summer so fitting it can wait. OBDII scanners can't read airbag codes so you'd need a dealer to query the airbag module to find out what's caused the light to come on.

Donut / clockspring, call it what you wil, my vote is that tis kaput!
Swap it out now and let the ECU reset itself before you get close to MOT time and have to buy in a panic or heaven forbid PAY a sparkie to do it. You just know you'll get done for scanning and resetting the codes if you put it off too long.

airbag systems work on a resistance measurement of the ABS loom, so if there is an issue an error is thrown up. normally a bad connection. Worn clock springs have been known to be an issue for jeeps which the airbag uses for it's power. Just by disconnecting a connection can throw up errors. As Mike suggests scanning the system for the error codes will help plus you should be able to clear the error. Remember ECU scanners give you an idea where the problem might be and not a 100% solution

Anyone no where I can have codes read in yorkshire, whilst staying clear of main stealers.

cheked errors using ignition, showed "donE" with no codes. stripped out fuses and bulbs, cleaned treminals.
Light went out when engine started, stayed out for 20secs, then came back on.
Now goes out momenterily, when engine started, then comes back on.

The dash thing only shows OBD engine codes. You need to get it scanned with a dealer's DRBIII scan tool.
