Rallyman, I get about 28mpg on the comp readout. Sometimes 26 sometimes 29~30 ish, so I say 28 as ave, that is a big mixture of driving, from town/city commuting to motorways running and A/B roads.

As has been said one thing that made me notice a difference was the fuel used. I used to use mostly Shell, but when a new Morrisons opened near me I used them, but have found I am getting less miles per tank, so have changed back to Shell and MPT has come back up.

I would expect 400 miles from a tankfull. Fuel warning light coming on at about 380 ish and safe to run to 400 if required. Although I have had over 420 to a tankfull. With Morrisons fuel it was 340....

Hope that helps..

Not an XJ, but the 3.1TD in my WJ is a VM (a 2.5 with an extra cylinder), and with my usual 50/50 town/motorway driving, it consistantly gets 380 miles ona a tank of supermarket but 450 on a tank of Shell.

I get 16MPG from the TJ :(

As you seem technically competent, I assume you have changed the air filter, fuel filter and alike, ckecked your injectors (Do the 2.5 diseasals have them?) etc and been through the normal stuff? Is your clutch slipping at all?

Think someone said that it's a bosch pump on the Cherry, maybe you could look at getting the settings checked out on the pump. Any smoke when pulling away.

BTW, insulting peeps on here is not the best way to get help.... Help is never far away on Birty's, but you have to take the piss taking too :) Tis Birty Ethics....

Oh, and Greggmo... Slapped wrist, you're in tech

Hang on do you mean the all in one sprint /oval /hill clime. Music, tyre testing, custom car, test club.
That’s a fine venue even the coppers like it there always there.
Just live in wedges mills opp chase gate
Its lovely you drift off to sleep in the summer to the sound of screeching tyres and a haze/ smell of tyre smoke.
Had a walk down one night there are some mint cars there.
