Speedo died on the Chief - pointers etc please gents?

Check the end that attaches to gearbox and make sure it hasn't moved or the gear has stripped.

Especially if it's been sat, unused for a while....it pulls out from the bottom anyway, so easily checked.

Ok cheers - so where on the gearbox and are then any other cables near it that will spell impending doom if I touch/pull/break them?

Normally, but not always, at the arse end of the box, near where the rear drive shalf attaches. I'm not familiar with your tranny set up, so not positive. The cable outer should be about as thick as a ciggie plus a little bit.

Oh dear, there we go again

The gearbox is the metally thingamibob that is bolted to the large whirly whatchamacallit in the front that makes lots of noise.

yeah I have got a gps app - and im running about +5mph fast on the speedo

was workin fine so i will at least have a little delve 2mrw

Both end of the cable appear to be where they should be and are secure

I attached the transfer case end to my drill and span it but no movement on the dial (no idea if that was a workable idea)

Next thoughts?

When you spun it with the drill, was the top end rotating as well??

Yes i thought of that as i packed up - the top end was still in the rear of the speedo - sounded like it was moving but I will have to pull it out next and physically check

Make sure you use the drill on low speed when hooked to the cable, especially with the top end connected to the speedo.

To stop you clocking your rent a hearse, the speedo will only work one way as well BD, you may want to try the drill in reverse too

The mystery is solved - cable snapped bout 6" back from speedo

Luckily I have a new one in the spares mountain but advice on fitting to make my life easy? Can I zip tie new to old and pull thru or will it get stuck somewhere? Or just pull the inner cable out of the old and push thru the new?
