Mazda Question
« on: February 25, 2014, 11:25:45 AM »

Right,

chap at work has got a 2001 Mazda Tribute 2.0 Petrol Manual all roader BG51 ZTZ.

intermittantly the speedo isnt working and the car stalls, I am thinking Gearbox Speed Sensor (Transducer??) but cannot find one for love nor money.

Any idea's if I am looking for the right thing, or could it be something different?

No Fault codes showing.

Cheers

Mazdas of that era are renowned for eating their HT leads.
I know it sounds daft but they were considered a consumable item and needed replacement every 12000 miles more or less. Park the thing in the dark, open the bonnet and watch the firework display! That said, I'd change the leads anyway, especially if they are getting on at all.
I dont think the two issues are related, but why not google for an owners club and check out their FAQ section.
Also of note is that Ford and Mazda used to share lots of under body parts in those days so you may find spares cheaper if they are in a Ford box (or not)! So if you find what the Ford equivalent is to the Maz check that OC too.

Cheers, will tell him to do the HT leads.

Yes it's the same as a ford maverick of that era.

Will look on owners club for him.

I'm sure you know this, but just in case not, remember that they're called the Ford Escape in the US! 8-)

Just trot down to your local motor factor with a sample of any offending, bust or suspect parts and let them do a comparison with similar bits from both Fords and Mazdas of that era, I'm sure you'll hit the jackpot most times.
The owners clubs will probably also have a list of part numbers that fit either vehicle, so if you cant get the part in a Mazda box you can get its equivalent as a Ford or pattern part.
Also, don't forget the speed or generic shops that sell things like the HT leads in singles where you just build up the set from their rack of different lengths for example. Same goes for herds of bits, the manufacturers rarely made one part for one application only, you just have to track the damn bits down, then when you have the OEM for each system, you're half-way there!
