2003 WJ Alarm problems
« on: March 31, 2014, 08:20:36 AM »

Hi all,

The last couple of nights the alarm has been going off randomly hours after locking the car, and then an hour or two later. This morning I got up and I unlocked it and then locked it a few times, and armed it with the motion sensor disarmed (one chirp). It has not gone off since (fingers crossed). I have no problems with locking or unlocking the doors with the fob all the doors lock fine nothing open etc. Driving me and the neighbours mad.

First off. Is there a way to disable the alarm i.e. not set it and be able to lock the jeep?

Secondly has anyone any ideas what may be causing it. I have read a lot but nothing jumps out at me as being the problem I have. Do I start looking at the wiring in the door jam for instance or replace the lock barrel switch etc?

Have you got any neighbours that are amateur ham radio doods (breaky, breaky, ten four and all that jazz) Look for houses with big aerials stuck on top of the chimney.

It has been known that they can mess up the airwaves badly and setting off car alarms when they depress the mike and send 5000 watts or something silly like that up into the sky.

Just a thought  :003:

I'm a radio ham :icon_redface:

400 Watts is the maximum the full license will allow legally. Foundation is 10w and Intermediate is 50w. But there are CB/Ham radio users that like to use a lot of power illegally, thousands of watts sometimes.

If it affects things like car alarms then they have a problem with their set up, as it is causing erroneous signals to affect other systems. A well set up/maintained station would not do this. I would speak to the radio operator if there turns out the be a Ham / CB user around you. If no help, ofcom.

I have issues with my fob, I have to be literally in the car for it to work! Changed the batteries but that didn't help.....

My old subaru forester used to randomly go off like you describe. Eventually, I stuck blue tack over the sensors inside the car, it shh'd after that! Not ideal though.

Hmmm seems a bit left field that one but I see no big ariels lol... could it be the car battery although I have no staring probs or perhaps a jount in the door jam wiring perhaps loosing contact as it gets cold overnight?

What sort of motion sensor is it? If it's ultrasonic, we used to have a car that could go off if the vents weren't switched to recirculate when leaving it. All it took was a bit of wind.

...Just checked the FSM, it is ultrasonic, so could just be wind setting it off.

anything dangling from the mirror? air fresheners? has been known for the wind to rock the car then off goes the alarm

Have you had a meter on the battery to check?

Just know because I have been there as well.
