CJ 7 front anti roll bar
« on: April 05, 2014, 09:15:43 PM »

any issues with removing the front anti roll bar from a CJ 7 in regards to road handling. since it's on leaves and the steering is "flexible" would removing it make any difference

First lift I ever did was a 2.5" lift on a YJ .......recommended by RE to ditch the roll bars traction bars and everything ..........so basically springs and steering holding it all together.......never ever a moment of worry and great on road and awesome offroad"

Went to 4.5" lift with the same ........still good :icon_super:

Now things have moved along a bit ...........no roll bars and 1 tons on a YJ with spring over and Tis still good..........
Only advice if poss is to outboard your shocks if you can...

Yet even with a pro comp 2.5" kit on my 5 it would be better on the road with a antiroll bar

Wildwoods right about the shock...  You on early or later shock mounts?

Many years ago I broke the pin off my RH front spring clamp plate while off road. Having found the source of the bang I removed the links from both sides of the front suspension and was amazed at the improved articulation, but on road handling with the narrow axle is pretty similar to that of a soup sandwich. I tried stiffer shocks and steering dampers to improve it, but ended up with a new clamp plate and a set of disconnects. Best of both worlds and avoids remarks from the MOT man.

79 year, didn't realise there was a difference in shock mounts. i assume the shocks are either inboard or outboard of the chassis rails

steering linkage is a Y affair rather than a direct link to the wheel steering arm and a seperate link rod. No steering damper fitted either so some new parts will require ordering.

I believe the later shock mounts are the same as Fsj"s

You are correct my fellow Northerner, the shock mounts changed to bolt on with the arrival of the wide trac axles (82ish), but the front shocks were always outboard of the chassis rails no matter which type.

Make sure it doesn't look like it's supposed to have one fitted, 'cause it's an MoT failure.
