As I am new to Jeep, I need some advice on rear wheel bearings, are they adjustable?, jacked back end up and whilst I could only feel a little play up and down, there was quite a bit end float (in and out play). advice on what to do to sort this.

Do you have a Dana 35 or 44 rear axle? Most uk TJ's came with 44's. If you have a 44 you have problems because they have tapered bearings held in by a retaining plate on the end. If you have a 35 these have internal c clips to keep the axle in and they have quite a bit of play.

Sorry its a 44, I've done a bit digging and there's a steel collar keeping it all in, is it a case of pressing this on more, can they slip? or renew the whole lot I understand there's the bearing a seal and the mild steel collar, pretty messed up design if you ask me.

I have never heard of the bearing or collar moving on the shaft. If you have excessive movement the bearing is probably shot.

Pull one and have a look first. There are only four nuts holding the retaining plate on. Usually they don't leak when you put them back but I use a bit of silicone on the outside of the seal just in case.

up/down movement = no (bearing shot or starting to fail)
in /out movement ok

Can anyone confirm that the bearing set for my axle is a Timken set10, otherwise will have no option than to pull shaft to check.
on the play front the up down movement is tiny, but in out is quite a lot and this is what freaked me, its just with the locker and the slip yolk eliminator going to be fitted, as shafts have to come out if out else needs doing, rather order stuff up now and do the job once.

Well pulled a shaft to have a look, what a piss poor design, one poxy bearing taking all that load and no way of adjusting so looks like new bearing and seal for each side and the retaining plates look like they've seen better days so might as well get them too.

Make sure you get a proper kit with a metal collar in it, as you will have to destroy the old one to get it off.

Have ordered the bearings which i checked do come with the collar and the seals this morning.
