Rear Diff noise when turning
«

Hi,
The rear diff on my '98 grand cherokee has started to make bad noises when you make tight slow turns.
Doesn't do it when cold, only after its been driven a few miles, typically only started doing it after they changed the diff oil + additive.
It it likely to be just the clutch pack in the LS unit that needs replacing, and what sort of prices am i looking at?
Also is there anywhere you'd recommend in the south wales / south west area to fix it?
Thanks.

Is it a groaning noise on tight turns?
Assuming they've put the right stuff in (75W90 GL5 gear oil and Mopar friction modifier) and you've worked the lubricant into the plates (do some tight figure of 8s in a car park) you could be looking at a set of clutch discs (about £125 for genuine from Jeep) plus 3 hours labour, or worse ways a complete diff carrier assembly (kerching!) plus 4 hours.
But eliminate other stuff such as binding brakes etc. first.

Thanks for the reply, yes it is a groaning noise on tight turns.
It was a jeep dealer that did the service work, so assume they used the correct stuff. Was charged for oil and friction modifier on the invoice.
Tried the figure's of 8 in a car park, but no change. Returned it to the garage first who said noise was from the diff, but would require further investigating.
Is it usual for the for the groaning not to occur first thing when the diff is cold?

I had a similar problem last week and have just got the problem sorted now, following a reccomendation Mud-Club forum i contacted Mik Stansfield at REDNEXX (
sales@rednexx.co.uk
) <sales@rednexx.co.uk>. Mik builds competition diffs
Mik was more than helpful and game me plenty of advice over the phone and via 'e' mail. I took the car to Mik who stripped down the diff and showed me the damage, he gave me various cost options and honest advice. Mik fitted a complete new LSD carrier * gears, 4 bearings, new seals and also changed the oil in my front diff and transfer....... cost ...probably less than the labour charge only at the stealership.
I cant praise this guy enough .... a first class chap

Thanks for the reply's, its been fixed for a while now.
Your right about the steelerships thou, one almost gave a semi-reasonable quote/guide over the phone, but alas it was merely a ruse. On driving it round the carpark, their "expert technician", decided it most likely required a complete new back end
....
i'm sure u can imagine their gustimate... and would take at least 3 days to fix if the parts were available...
Anyway, a phonecall and a trip to edm, rear diff was removed, rebuilt and refitted same day, and yes, for notably less than the dealers labour price.
