evap system?
« on: June 06, 2014, 06:44:20 PM »

Guys,

Putting some new rear wings on- i looks like the evap system/ charcoal cannister is in the way. Do i really need it?

Can i remove it and just plug it? Will it throw a light up on the dash? Im assuming it will. Is there a way around it.

Was wondering if any one else has a solution?

If this is the canister that the fuel tank vents through then I believe its all part of the emissions clobber we all cart about till we ditch it.
So if it were me I'd run a piece of pipe from the tank right up to as close as you can get to the filler neck and tee into the top of the filler down pipe, like the CJs & TJs were.
Without some type of tank vent you'll get a wet smelly pair of trousers for the wrong reason next time you go for fuel.
You will also need to change for a vented fuel cap too but all seems reasonable unless somone with MOT nouse advises otherwise.

They are in two locations, the early TJ's had them stuffed in the O/S/R (or was it the other way round?) wheel arch, basically you don't need it, bin the foooooker!!

Upto 2003, i believe, theyre located under the bonnet. after that they are under the passenger wheel arch as you say.

I am thinking of binning but have read differing opinions on whether it shows an engine check light! I understand that the engine management doesnt know whether the cannister is attached or not though- so bypass it maybe the option!

If you do get a check lamp and dont want to loose it, can you relocate to the alternate position under the bonnet?

Tbh honest thats what we are looking at doing - id rather have it than faff around with issues after ive removed it!

it looks like you can remove the system, trim the brackets and refit lower down and further back.
