Steering Wheel Adjustment

The steering wheel on my '93 XJ is out of alignment by about 35 degrees. I thought that I could just take it off the spline and put it in the right place, but I can't do that because the horn button comes up throught one side of the centre boss, so it can only go on one way.

Does anyone know of any way to get the steering wheel straight so that the spoke doesn't block out the speedo when you are going in a straight line. It is a 'sport' type wheel with three metal spokes and a leather rim. I think it is an original part.

it would be easier to adjust the steering rod that runs from the box....look under the front by the axle and you will see it.......

I take it that I can adjust this rod without affecting the steering.

at 35 degrees it will be ok.......you could compensate with the steering stops if your not satisfied.

Once you start messing with stuff in the front end you'll need to have an alignment done. It may be better to pull you pitman arm and spin the wheel while leaving the tie rods/drag link in the stock location.

the pitman arm has a master locator spline and it will be seized solid i bet...

the easy option is as above all should go ok......no need for the tracking to be checked as your only adjusting the upper steering box arm....but for piece of mind would be a good idea as this could be the original cause of the steering wheel alignment problem.......but that's another question.

If you're going to get the toe (alignment ) checked/adjusted, get it done before you centralise the 'wheel otherwise you could end up doing it twice.

Thanks Guys, done one and a half turns on the adjustment collar and thats it sorted. I'll run it in and get the tracking done tommorrow.
