electric seats

i need some guidance before i start ripping the interior to bits trying to find the problem......

both the seats in our latest xj have stopped working (both at the same time, which would rule out anything on the seats themselves).....anyone know of a common fault to cause this or a place to start investigating??

the same fuse controls the central locking & as that is working i am assuming thats not the problem.....

Maybe is has a weight sensor and after you ate all your easter eggs, it's decided not to work anymore  :twisted:

Where do the wire run? are they down the centre console (Shared earth) or out near the door pillars? I guess there's a control module for them with big trannies or relays in it to run the power... have you found that yet?

from memory, the wiring for em runs into & thro the centre console.......

none of the relays in the board are marked up to run the seats, but there is probably one in a real stupid place knowing jeep......

More likely a "Control Unit" with a number of small Relays or more likely large transistors I would have thought to feed the various motors... one  for each motor at least I would expect, poss one for each motor in each direction....

Likely points would be a bad earth in the center there somewhere, or the power to the control box, wherever that is (Or it's earth)

What year's yur XJ? most have a thermal cutoff in the fusebox as well.

Hi KD.

Had the same problem with mine and it was down to a break in the cables going to the seats. Couldn't manage to trace the break without hauling out the entire centre console, so I ran a new live from the fuse (after disconnecting the old one) and picked up the earth on one of the seat bolts.

Providing your break is before the split (to feed both seats) you only need to run a live to one seat and it will power both. Just cut in to the live and earth at the seat end to connect your new cables, and make sure that your cable is heavy enough to take the load. (current I mean, not you with the Easter Eggs!!!)
