Grand Cherokee WJ high level air intake
« on: September 12, 2014, 05:35:22 PM »

I didn't fancy a full blown, nail it to the side of my GC, big lump of plastic snorkel and I wasn't keen on having my standard air intake just behind the passenger side headlight, ready to take a healthy swig of whatever I happened to be driving through. Despite it being higher as a result of a four inch lift!
Cue a high level air intake at scuttle level, hidden away underneath the plastic that covers the wiper mechanism.
It cost me the grand total of £3.98, although some parts I already had and all the tools required were already in my toolbox.
The £3.98 was spent on a bass reflex tube from Maplin, the other stuff needed was, a length of flexible tube, flat material of your choice to blank the original intake (I used polycarbonate), decent adhesive and silicone sealant.
The airbox needs to come out and have the old intake blanked off and sealed, then a hole bored on the rear side of the airbox, to accept the bass reflex tube. When that's done, seal that with silicone too. The next job (and in my case the slightly more challenging job, as the wipers were a sod to take off), was to remove the plastic cover at the bottom of the windscreen, which involves removing the wipers. When that's off, bore a hole in the scuttle, big enough to take the new intake pipe and be sure to deburr it.
All you need to do now is re assemble everything and it's job done. Off course if you want to make all of this water tight, you could blank the airbox drain holes while you have it all apart, although this was not the route I took.

Airbox original intake blocked and sealed..

Bass reflex tube mounted and sealed..

Scuttle panel bored and new intake pipe positioned..

Finished job showing how discrete it all looks (you can't even see it)!..

Here's a better picture of the route of the intake pipe..
