You're off roading ability ......or rather that of your Jeep is with the axles rather than the lift.....

I am sure you can squeeze 31s in with just a boost lift of rubber pucks 1" or so....

The real offroad ability will be the axle ratios...... 4.88 and the lockers....... Speak to Gaz he has soft lockers or similar..........they will allow you to go most of the places I took you........
Add a winch at some time later and you are bullet proof........

Out of the box the OME 2" is the best option by far. Absolutely no need to go taller.

OME is very good and you could put 31s on with no other work and equally you could go down the route of high clearance arches and re-gearing and put 35s on with the same lift.

Just to clarify, because I think it's got lost in the thread, a TJ will go onto 31s with no other work at all. Mine and many others run like this.

It is going to be noticeably slower to accelerate though, especially with the 2.5.

Just noticed that YT is selling his Rough Country + 3" springs ....... Think they fit a TJ......
Bit of a saving for you.

Rough Country stuff is available from David (I like a chat!) at Llama so you could source the other stuff from him.......

No one has mentioned body lifts........ Tall ones look retarded BUT a 1" lift will give more clearance for those full articulation moments and also allow the jet wash to get to parts that otherwise will develop crud and rust......

Even choices to confuse you.........


Personally .....If you can afford the OME 2" lift and can throw a body lift on.    £120 ish.
Then you are sorted for good and it will drive on the road better than some of the cheaper and harsher kits.

You can get OME in the uk but with limited outlets. Reason being is their cost as they are towards the top end of the quality stakes. Rubicon express, ome, clayton are at the top end (personal opinion will always factor heavily) Llama4x4 sells alot of rough country mainly because they are cheap but he can obtain other brands if required. You just have to ring and face the big talking session

Being bit by the bug for sure LOL, Your doing the right thing and asking for advice, now take your time and decide what you want/need from your Tj as the least expensive route is always the right route first time, as it gets really expensive buying kit after kit to get to where you want to be. Have fun

advice from an ex TJ owner who has done it a couple of ways

From a stock TJ first purchase is 31" tyres, just need to adjust your steering stops
Then go 1" body lift with a 1" motor mount lift to keep future vibes and angles good, this will give you no need for spacers and will be good for the future mods
Next is your lift, 2" OME is really good on and off road and will get you most places and teach you how to drive

If you go any bigger with the 2.5 you need to re-gear and sell a kidney.

I wouldn't go for cheap options, they are just that and don't be afraid of buying from the USA, the pound is good

left hand 97 has 2" teraflex, very big lift for 2", 33's no regear, 1" motor and body lift, flexed like a bastard
right hand 03 has 2.5 " OME, 31's, no regear, 1" motor and body lift, got most places the other one did, ground clearance the only issue

Makes a lot of sense what you've said, not hoping to conquer the world like some of the guys (and they could), just have a bit of fun and avoid as much damage as possible 

The OME seems to be a top choice, I'll tootle off and have a look into them.

Some very sound advice given by folks who have gone down this road, MOCAJ has pretty much nailed it.

Whatever you do, TAKE YOUR TIME !!!!

Ours has a 2" OME lift, as it has heavy replacement bumpers & a hard top, the springs do (or did) come with different weights for different extra's added.
Go any higher & thats when you have to start spending big on other drive train mods.

We run 31's & have fitted 1.1/2" wheel spacers but this is not needed. 

Had to have some diff work done so took the opportunity to re-gear it because the 31's made a big difference to our Auto.

We have True Trac limited slip diff front & rear. Where this wont go off road I dont want to take the truck probably.

Even extreme lifted trucks still get stuck, just a bit further

If you stilll want to use it daily dont go above 2" & its still usable

& TAKE YOUR TIME !!!!

I have no Jeeps at the moment but gone from stock to pretty well modded, I know most of the pitfalls etc with a TJ

My advice is go slowly and learn to drive your Jeep. Folks just seem to fit big lifts, tyres and drive anywhere. That is fine until you fail, then they don't know what to do.

If you start small and learn to drive you will be an awesome driver and a safe one, a TJ on 31's can give you great fun, ask Gaz
