Drive Shaft Swap

Hopefully, we will get some dry weather this weekend, so I am planning to replace the front offside drives shaft in the TJ, since I've been told it's a simple job.


Any thing I need to know, be aware of or just general advice?

I'm doing a similar job this weekend - fitting a Aussie Locker, which required both driveshafts out.

Have you found a decent How To? Everything I've read says it should be pretty straight-forward. Have you got a big (36mm?) socket for the axle nut? I'll be covering the axle in penetration oil a few days beforehand, apparently seperating the hub and knuckle can be tricky.

Get some plus gas/wd40 on the 3 bolts that hold the hub to knuckle, today more tomorrow then on Friday, unbolt the bolts half way give them all a tap from the back, then thin cold chisel gently working round the backplate to separate hub
When loose remove bolts then pull out shaft.
I use a Henry Hoover to clean dust out of tubes so new splins don't push old mud dust grit etc into diff.

If you dont feel happy doing it ivan i can drive down sunday afternoon help you out/ let you do it but point inright direction. just let me know dont mind....

leave the bearing on the shaft - you  don't need to remove it to do the diff - in fact I've changed UJ's with them on

Get some fresh bolts in case you have to butcher  the ones on it

It's not a tricky job Ivan, give it a go and call Tony or Bubba if it starts to go wrong.

Plus as it isn't your daily driver if a bolt or something breaks you can probably reassemble it most of the way and then get a replacement from one of us by post - I've got loads of odds bolts lying about and I know Tony is the same.

The problem is, I can't do the work in my drive (steep slope), so have to move the Jeep onto the road, which is level(ish).
