Hi guys :) New here today; i've been tinkering on my 2000 XJ 2.5TD a bit but have reached a bit of a problem today... :( Wondering if i can pick your brains!

To fill you in a bit, my cherokee is standard except:
Twin Kenlowe electric fan conversion, tied into AC and with a kill switch inside cabin for crossings :)
A K&N cone filter
BFG ATKOs
Xenon H4 kit

Right, what i was doing today with my caveman-like level of mechanical skill was trying to replace the power steering fluid.  I got the Mopar stuff from Jeep and went about it, as the steering is intermittently not very well assisted at 3/4 lock so i thought i'd change the fluid as it looks pretty filthy....
FIRST OFF, i mistakenly disconnected the small hydraulic pipe at the bottom of the P/S pump and started engine.  I replaced it as soon as  i realised that it actually goes over the top of the engine to the big metal cylinder near the brake master cyclinder and has nothing to do with P/S....bloody odd - no fluid in it; it just sucks air
I then removed clamp from bottom of steering fluid bottle and started engine.  Not such a good idea as fluid went everywhere :( I really shouldn't even try these things....but i like ot have a go and try to learn instead of just paying jeep. :/
So i cleared up, replaced the hose, refilled with fluid and let it froth and calm down as i topped it up while i steered left and right.  The whining decreased a fair bit and the steering seemed ok.
But when i went for a drive, whilst the steering seeemd ok, the engine is gutless and lumpy above 2000 rpm!  What on earth have i done! ?
After 10 miles or so of driving around, i think it is getting slightly worse, not better, and to cap it all, the inconsistent steering assistance is back. :(

I really would be very grateful if any of you experienced chaps could help me out here as the car is really not right and i can't see how disconnecting that wrong pipe could have been so major or why perhaps not bleeding the steering properly would lead to such major loss of turbo power!
Many thanks, Richard Utting :)

it will be one of the large plastic pipes routing from the turbo to the rad type/shape box unit between the air filter and engine induction.....i don't have a picture for you but my explanation probably needs a lot to be desired.
you must have loosend it when cleaning the power steering oil from the engine bay....check all the clips and make sure the hose is seated properly.

I've just double checked everything but nothing is loose
Also, I just took it for another spin and it's starting to sound rough.  It goes fine til 2000rps as you know, but now it sounds slightly knocky/gurgly at 1600rpm and is sounding a bit phut-phut at tickover :( This reminds me of the noise it made when very low on oil once after a leaking oil filter.....very worried now :(
One thing my dad said, what about the soaking i gave the electrics...might somthing be in limp mode?
Also, there is a T-piece off that air line from P/S pump to AC housing...where does that bit go and is it important?
Thanks so much :)

Thanks mate. Will do :)
I wonder if this is an electrical timing thing as once my dad got the jeep really soaked and it started missing and got really lumpy like it is now.  Perhaps my hosing the engine down whilst hot drove some steam somewhere it shouldn't have been...
Well, at least at the moment, i like that theory better than the air line disconnection one...although i have no idea what that T-piece in the line leads to....could be that.....Cars eh? Multo stressful ;)

The intercooler pipes come up from above the P/s box, if your looking into the engine from the front they will be to the left of the rad, they are big fat pipes going up to the turbo(snail shaped thing) and engine. Like IOM says you could well have disturbed them as they tend to rub on the pipes coming from the steering box, check for splits, they need to be fitted well as the pressure is quite high in there and any leakage causes massive loss of power.

You might have upset the engine management by running it with something disconnected. Try disconnecting the battery for a minute to reset it and try again.

It's still intermittent; i still can't find what i've upset - it must be electrical: what do all the various electrical joints/sockets around the engine bay do?

Just FYI guys, it ended up to be completely coincidental (TYPICAL!)
It was the potentiometer on the throttle (accelerator)
Most grateful for all your ideas anyway.  ATB Richard :)
