Well here it is....

Emptied all the junk out and had a proper ganders at it. Totally original, no add ons, no bling, no repairs. the only non standard fitting is the bird's nest....

Having pulled the carpet, most of the floor is solid

But the drivers side is a wreck

Just to add insult to injury there's a foot long hole in the chassis under the drivers seat as well

To cheer myself up. I decided to get it to move under it's own power. The 258 turned over OK by hand so I lobbed a decent battery in and hooked the fuel pump up to a can of fresh juice and, vroom! Fired up straight away. Water pump shagged, carb needs tweaking and vac pipe rotted off dizzy, but purrs. Phase 2, get it to move. Found the clutch slave under the seat in bits, piston seizes solid inside and rubber seal ruined by WD40, so cleaned it up and put new seals in. Had a hose made up and bolted it on, cleaned out master and bled, voila! we have clutch pedal but clutch plate stuck.

Cranked it over in gear with the pedal on the floor, and after a bang, off it came, 3 forward, 1 reverse, 4WD hi and lo. Happy days

No brakes, master cylinder rotten along with several pipes but enough for today

Before I go nuts and order a new one, has anyone got a decent fuel tank assembly? I need the whole lot, tank, skid plate, straps etc.

The orange is original and stays. It never had a roll bar, and I like the look without it, although fitting one would allow me to use modern inertia seat belts. nor sure yet.

Lap belts on the driver and front passenger seat shouldn't pass an MoT. The belts should restrain the upper body of the occupants.

even with age related rights and no upper mounting point available?

My old Land Rover didn't even have lap belts when built and had no issue with MOT's at several places.

I did install front lap belts because it was pretty scary when the drivers door would open while driving along.

'68 onwards should be retro fitted to three point belts.

drilling, bolts and new belts maybe requried

If you decide you want a rollbar (and you probably should), the CJ style one from my YJ should bolt right in, along with its attached 3 point belts.

I have a later 'Family style' one that I've yet to swap in. This would give me the incentive to finally do so.

I got pulled over twice and got severely told off and threatened...

It had "lap-onlys", so I drilled the rollbar and but in lap and diagonals.

Tango has 3 point static belts, the shoulder belt is bolted to the rear wheel tub near the back.

Tim, hang on to that roll bar, I'll have it when you get it out.

Haven't had much time of late, but finally bit the bullet and had a look at that foot long hole in the chassis. After removing as much rot as I dared, I ended up with a four foot hole to repair

With no repair pieces available for this section, I had to either replace the whole thing, graft in a piece from another chassis or make a new piece. In the end I went for the latter. The rails are made from two channels welded together, the inner half had turned to dust, with very little left to cut out. After some measuring up, I had some steel plate cut and folded into channel and fabbed up a replacement section in two pieces, as well as copies of the parking brake brackets. I made the replacement channel twice as deep as the original to reinforce the whole section. The rusty bits in the picture are the only substantial bits left from cutting the rot out.

After much careful trimming, the new pieces fit like a glove and are in situ ready for welding

Luckily, there's not a lot of floor left, so welding along the top from above is a doddle, but not looking forward to welding the rest of it upside down

In case you're wondering why I haven't taken the tub off as per conventional thinking. Well....apart from the usual issue of workshop space, it's so bendy at the moment that the best place for it is on the chassis, I have repro floor pan parts on the way from Classic enterprises in the 'states http://www.classicent.com/ and having the body in position on the chassis will help square it up and get the mountings aligned properly first time.

Got the parts in for the floor from Classic Enterprises in Wisconsin. Nicely hand made panels in heavy gauge steel. After a lot of fettling and welding, no more Fred Flinstone floor
