Ok, so Tango runs rich as hell, and the wretched little Carter single barrel carb has clearly been got at, with the auto choke pulled off, vac pipes off and plugged and generally looking pretty sad. No air leaks or stuck bits, so must be internal problems. Do I bother attempting to fix it, or are there any tried and tested alternatives that don't cost (another) fortune. Want to keep it simple.

Ive got the same ones on 2 of mine. Have you tried the adjusting screw at the bottom of the housing. Should just be a case of screwing it in about half turn so shes not pulling as much gas. Is she idleing fine but your just seeing the plugs dirty.

Whats she like when you accelerate.

That carb is simple enough although lots of know idle problems.

Have u a manual fuel pump also as sometimes an electric pump can force too much into the float chamber.

 i had one fitted which gave circa 18mpg, the carb even though simple worked but got worse and dropped to 9mpg with no umph so throttle all or nothing and no joy to drive.

swapped to a 38 DGAS webber, electric pump, a bit of jet tuning and it's a different beast regarding acceleration. idle is smooth and will now do 70+ (bottle factor goes at this speed)

I needed to source a single barrel to double barrel adaptor to make it fit (couldnt source a double barrel intake at the time). yes these are expensive new but second hand a bargain can be found on the bay.

In the good old days our 258 did 25 mpg with the Carter (2 barrel) and was nice to drive - lots of torque of course.... managed to cruise at 80mph if you wanted to... 70 was realistic (standard gearing, 31" tyres). Now got a problem with tickover / slow running but hoping that will be fixed by a rebuild kit from Lighthouse (£25...).

Having talked to a variety of people (and spent countless hours on American websites...) about Carter vs Webber, a new Webber will be a big improvement over a knackered Carter, but "like for like" there is not a big difference. Some sensible sounding tuning shops have a view that the carb is not the limiting factor and not the first thing to change.

There are literally thousands of 258's over there happily running on Carters - there can't be much wrong with them...

The Motocraft 2100 2 barrel carb is known to be OK on the V8s.......Ok at angles and stuff....

Can it be used on the 6 cylinder with an adapter?

I think I might get a rebuild kit for it and see. It used about 3 gallons fast idling for about an hour, I reckon the diaphragm for the metering needle is shot.

Carter BBL's bring the suck on slopes. My '89 would constantly quit on hills, due to the float being poorly designed.


MC2100 gets my vote too.

This is a Carter YF, I think. It's never going offroad as far as I'm concerned, just want it running properly.

x2 on on the mc2100, plenty of info on the swap on jeep forum. Mine has never stalled or spluttered at any angle. Good carb for offroading

There's a guy on ebay.com that sells them all set up for a 258, depending on your inlet you will probably need an adaptor

Fitted an overhaul kit today. Also replaced the missing auto choke unit and reinstated the wiring to the idle solenoid, and she's running much better.
