4.5" lift...
« on: May 18, 2006, 09:27:59 AM »

Having just sold my Saab we've got some cash that's supposed to be destined for the new steading project.

But...

I'm wondering what size tyres will fit under a 4.5" lift...? 33's?  :smt112

Yeah but on an xj??

I saw a picture of an xj somewhere that had bushwacker flares and cut-away arches that had a 4.5" lift and the tyres looked fookin massive. Think it might have been on jeepclub...

Hey dblades, great to have another jeep owner up here!

I'm in aberdeen although looking to move out into the sticks soon.

As Rich says, I've got an XJ so my old lift kit wouldnt be much use to you.

Have you been to Nortrak, the pay'n'play at Inverbervie yet? Hopefully see you there sometime...

p.s. wave if you see a lifted xj around town - hardly anyone does up here

hi lefty,

you wont get 33's on with a 4.5" lift & if you could, you would HAVE to regear..........33's wont clear without at least 5.5" lift & chopping bodywork about!

so if you want 33's, its an even bigger lift, body mods & a regear......MUCHO ££££££!!!

hmmmm,

lots to think about there...

New bumpers are top of the list. got my snorkel and the discos are shipping as i speak...

what's involved in re-gearing - just a new final drive? that's gottabe pretty dear... £500?

Shop around for your re-gear if that's the way you want to head. Costs vary hugely, some 'specialists' will send your axles off to other companies to re-gear so find the end-man as opposed to the middle man. I've heard good things of Rednexx. See Suppliers

It may also be more cost effective to purchase your own r&p. It's a good time to chuck those lockers in too...

You will get 33" tyres under a 4.5" lift with cut away arches, but I do mean cut away and tubbed (like they do on rally cars), not trimmed back!

I've seen at least two XJ's (Vince's '93 & a '99) with 4.5" lifts and 33x12.50x15 BFG MTs. They both had Bushwacker flares and a EDM wheel well expansion (he's a Jeep specialist and Subaru rally driver/engineer). They flex like crazy.

I reckon you could do just the BW flares with less trimming and still fit but lose flex.

You'll almost definitely need a SYE kit and new driveshaft, correct bumpstopping and new wheels to get away from the body more. The stock control arms and steering geometry is also getting to it's limit at 4.5" if you want to do it properly. Even with 31s I want to regear so it's a definite for 33s.

The general consensus for lift height and tyre size on XJs is 2" = 30", 3"= 31", 4.5"=32" 6"=33" with only minor adjustments and trimming. I'm all in favor of trimming more and lifting less, keeping a low centre of gravity but it has to be done right IMHO.

Have a look at some of the combinations on www.naxja.org/forum and see what takes your fancy.

Hope it helps, JH

My old beast had 32`s on before we even fitted the Bushwacker Flares. The arches had to be cut away to fit them and then there was plenty of room for 33`s,but with the articulation i had i didnt need to bother. It did struggle a bit on the road, especially uphill as it had no re-gearing done at all,and i did get a small amount of vibes through the driveline

been weighing up sticking 235-85-16's on mine, sorta 32" and a bit, hoping no hacking needed as they are much narrower than 33-12.5.
And KD before you fooking start the lift kits should be ready at the end of the month so sod off  :P
