XJ heater issue
« on: January 31, 2016, 08:17:53 PM »

Guys need some help for the old man, he's recently purchased a 2000 XJ, it's got a heating issue. He can't turn off the heat, and can't change the heat position  (i.e. defrost, feet, vents etc, he can still operate the fan speed. The heater is a new style electronic one not the older style.

Have any of you come across this before or got any suggestions on repair.

It's currently 30 deg and there's no need for a heater at the minute, makes driving it an uncomfortable journey at present.

He has temporarily blocked the pipes to stop the flow but he wants a more permanent fix.

Check for leaking vacuum pipes. There is one that pushes on the back of the heater controls. All the doors are worked by vacuum. If it has cruise control, and that's not working that would be a good indication of a vacuum leak.

Vent positions are vacuum controlled as stated above so check for a leak. The heat control might have a sticking motor on the bottom of the blend door. Have a look at this...

Mum's TJ had the heater stuck in one position when she got it, and that was because a vacuum line had fallen off the intake manifold.
Don't think it would affect temperature though, unless you've got two separate issues.

There's a plastic vacuum tank behind the front bumper. Make sure it's intact.
