YJ windscreen frames
« on: February 24, 2016, 03:30:11 PM »

Do they all rust and get a bit 'crinkly? I have two that are both useable but really need some attention if they are going to last.

Is it worth me taking the time to repair the better one and does anyone have any helpful tips?

I'm new to YJ and the related Jeeps so don't assume I know anything! If there's a cheap place to buy replacements or anyone has a good frame and screen to sell then let me know.

No....have  mine....

I tweak it and cracked the screen, that's why I went feral with cage only.......

If you remove screen you could realign the frame and tis done.....frame is 5 years old and no rust... Just has a few tree marks on guttering edge....

Is it true that the glass is fairly easy to take out and re-fit? I've got one decent glass in a frame that needs a bit of TLC.

Has anyone refurbed a slightly bashed ad rusty frame or seen any good guides  / write-ups? I'm generally ok at this stuff but always prefer some pictures and a guide to stop me from spending hours doing something that can be done a quick and easy way.

Or is anyone breaking a YJ that has a good frame and glass?

I fixed mine up last year that was bad and now you wouldnt notice. Brought it to a glass place and they broke glass taking it out. Probably unavoidable as its a 1994. Then they gave me the frame back and I grinded out the rust with a grinder and put some mesh (from halfords) and isopon (halfords) and followed instructions and sanding. Took a few weeks in the evening to get it right but could be done in a weekend as you have to let it dry and sand and reapply. Then I primed and sprayed and brought it back to buy a new glass.

They install a new glass all in for 80 Euro. they cut it from the original and etched it with a BSS safety sign. I have done 2 of these and they look good and Im not a bodyshop guy.

Best to take it off the Jeep as its a bitch to work with on the Jeep. Broke 2 bolts getting off and 1 needed to be welded off. Use heat as it works best. I believe the aftermarket ones you buy and flimsy.

I took the glass out because my rust had gone under. If it hadn't I wouldn't have removed the glass.

Thanks Mike, I just had a look on rockauto and realised I could buy new frame and new glass for OK ish money.

I'm still in the XJ frame of mind and forget that wranglers are pretty much bolt together machines with loads more spares and aftermarket

James,

I got a new windscreen glass shipped from the states and it arrived intact, which surprised me, couldn't get my old one out of the rusty frame in one piece

Think it only cost about £100 plus shipping, but you could get a local glass company to cut you one as they are flat, couldn't find anybody local so shipped it instead

Managed to cut old broken glass out of OK frame as a practice then cut good glass out of rusty frame. Cleaned good glass and ok frame up, just need to paint ok frame where I sanded back some bubbling paint and urethane good glass in. Proper job will be new frame, glass and seals but this will be good for temporary (like 5 years  :003:)

The frames seem to be designed to hold moisture and rot, I guess I'm not the first to need to replace one!

Also go cat fitted to exhaust and it smells a bit less like rich running / unborn the fuel now.
