Have just tried to remove a very rusted skid plate, however, some of the bolts are spinning and I can't see how to get to them, was thinking of getting the grinder out, but it's a bit close to the tank!, any ideas?

been there 
drill them out, then either weld some nuts on top of the channel = pain in the arse
or use nutserts or rivnuts

Is it a TJ? Front or rear bolts. I managed to get a socket down in the chassis member on my front ones when they spun. Stupid square section on the underside of the bolt head that just spins in the square hole are ruins it. The rears I had to grind off, when the tank was out I welded some nuts on the rear chassis member.

Yeah it's a TJ, only just realised it actually supports the tank, which I have just stupidly brimmed....... Booked it in with someone that knows what they are doing!!!

Brimmed tank is much safer than one with just fuel vapour in, they are the not so silent killers.
If you do try anything yourself, fill it with an inert gas like argon or CO2, but still be damn carefull, also make sure you support the tank 'cos once you have removed the bolts, the filler tube, wiring and fuel lines will get ripped right off as the tank drops on the ground!
The reason I know is because my tank fell on me instead!
Nowadays I cant believe I was that stupid OR that young!
