wtdf is going on with my steering column? Help please!!
« on: April 02, 2016, 07:01:24 PM »

Hello all, in trying to t get my new old cj7 back on the road, i bought a replacement steering shaft to try and cure some of the wandery steering...i bought the uprated kind with a uj at each end. I
n removing the old shaft the lower steering column bearing practically fell apart. So i order one of these bearings too. Now upon trying to fit my new parts Ive run into an issue - Some how my central steering column has moved inside the outer tube, approx. about an inch  - so basically its is not poking out enough to get the new steering shaft onto or to put the inner bearing in properly.
I have no idea how this has happened or how to fix it? i even have pictures of it before and now! so Im not going totally mad although i feel like i am!
As the column isn't reach adjustable has any one got any ideas how to remedy things,? I've even removed the whole complete column from the car so try and fix without clambering in the car etc.
please find pictures showing inner column in wrong position to fit shaft onto.

looks like your missing a securing bolt at that point plus a support for the shaft inside the larger tube. Might be worthwhile showing an over view of the whole column to give an idea of the issue easier

more showing complete column out of jeep.
Is it possible that the outer shaft could  have slipped at all downwards ? there seems to be a black nylon layer between the 2 outer steel tubes - they don't want to budge but maybe are jammed?

IVE FIXED IT! the top inner column is telescopic ffs.
after grabbing it with some grips i managed to pull it back down. so not only is lower shaft breakable in accident with its plastic  joint, the top inner also has room to shorten.

next question: does any one know of any rubber boots that can be put over uj joints on new uprated steering shaft as it doesn't have protective boots like oem shaft. thx
