cj7 front lamps
« on: April 11, 2016, 10:11:29 AM »

As my cj7 is originally an American import the wiring has been hacked and scotch locked badly by PO for the uk.

Since taking the car mostly all apart I have removed all this spaghetti.

Now I have some questions!

What are the 2 lamps under the headlamps supposed to be used for? They have twin filament bulbs in like you get in the rear lamps…  I guess they used to be side lights and turn blinkers maybe?

As I have the amber side repeaters and amber front indicators I don’t know what to use these lamps for in the uk?

The main upper larger head lamp features the usual halogen dipped and main beam lamp, and also has a currently unused side/parking bulbs. So I can wire these as per usual uk practice.

So what do I use these extra lamps for? auxiliary fog/driving lamps would be nice, but the bulbs are the wrong type to throw any real light out I’d of thought.

What do they do on uk cjs basically? thx

I am literally replacing my wiring on the cj7 today so know exactly what you are talking about.

I am bound to be corrected by someone however I believe the uk spec is modified from the original US spec hence various alternative wiring set ups.

The U.K. Version was fitted with indicators and side lights mounted on the wings as the 2 lower lights that carried an indicator but also acted as a side light were not legal in the uk.
A lot of people (including me) have taken off the wing mounted side lights ( or gaypods as they are referred to on here) and utilised the spare auxiliary hole on the main 7" light to put in a side light bulb.
The smaller lower lights then acts as indicator only. Needs a slight mod  to the wiring and the addition of the side marker indicators on outside of the wing if you don't have them but does make it look more original.

I hope that makes sense but sure some pictures can be uploaded and in case your lights looking a bit aged the classic mini light as well as the retaining ring and bulbs etc are exactly the same as the jeep so you can upgrade them if needed to stronger bulbs etc

Yup headlights are the standard 7" lucas jobbies.

On mine 'gaypods' are gone.

The smaller lights now act as indicators.

Hope that helps.

I have wired them up to come on with the sidelights to act as running light with a white sidelamp in the headlamp to keep plod and mot man happy but also use the higher wattage side as the indicator

Mine has been returned to how Toledo intended it, but with white sidelights.

My set up is     No gay pods

Side light in headlight used

Indicator below headlight is both sidelight and indicator

Small side repeater on wings

Looks cool and no issues with mot man so far or police, although it's rare I drive it in the dark
