WJ rear diff implosion
« on: May 20, 2016, 12:49:24 PM »

Finally got round to assessing the damage done at Harptree the other weekend, and I haven't snapped a halfshaft (hurrah) I have imploded all the planetary gears in the rear diff (boo).

All four appear to be missing teeth, so I guess I will need to replace them - is that viable? Where do I get them from and what else will need doing with them?

In other news the brand new ball joint on top of the axle has separated from its flange, which I am fairly confident shouldn't happen!! [emoji35] that explains the knocking then, I guess - annoying that I just got new lca bushes but I guess they need doing too anyway.

Out of interest what have you done to help the angles on the ball joint with your lift, a arm spacer?

I had noticed... [emoji6] but I don't have the readies to act upon it!

I have an A-arm spacer, came with the lift kit. I sent a message to Jeep Chrysler Parts (who I got it from) and they are sending a replacement, something about a possible faulty batch (I hope)

I am striking out with breakers on eBay - any breaking an overland say they don't have any planetary gears to sell... Anyone got any lying around, or know where I can get some?

Am I calling them by the wrong name?

breakers are only going to sell a full diff surely? Is there any sign of damage to the diff housing or is it just the planet gears? You could just weld them up LOL

No obvious signs of damage to the carrier, although I have had to halt progress for a while and have yet to get the gears out so I might see something then...

I'm not opposed to getting a complete diff just for the gears but none of the breakers have even offered that as an option?

I have found this diff on eBay eBay number: 252155846934 (can't work out how to put a link on my phone).

Its stated as from a 3.1 diesel Grand but the picture looks like the diff carrier in my rear axle - does that mean they will be the same or is there a chance the internal gears are different?

3.73 & 3.91 carriers should be the same, certainly from adding RnP gears they are
