Greetings! I'm lost in this section....I have done a search and not found anything to help...yet
I am on crutches, long story but the driver door won't stay open, its a niggly thing that normally not bothered about till i trapped my foot today. Big pain. lots and lots. So what is the part called that keeps the door open, is it something i can do if i ebay it?
Secondly, the heater only works full or non, which is fine, my KJ did the same but the temperature doesn;t change so its just blowing tepid air at full blast which makes me feel colder....not good for more pain the steering wheel is set at about 50degrees when straight, am I right thinking heating issues are fixed in steering coloumn.... and could both things be done at same time..not by me. Makes reversing trailers a bit of an arse, just niggly things, loving the jeep, absolutley miles apart from KJ so smooth and comfy!

heater will most likely be the resistor pack, located passenger footwell.

blimey 40 odd pound.....does anyone know of a breaker, and can the same part be used on near and offside? there's a near side one for 25..... thanks!

Just googled xj door check strap, pictures shows it isn't sided so the same one would fit both doors.
Blower speed and steering as already mentioned above. Heat might be the door control motor on the bottom of the heater box. I've seen a post on jeepforum showing the location and what they did to it. I'll see if I can find a link, might need somebody to get the motor off the box for you and see if it's working.

Here's the thread. It's from the TJ section but it's the same heater box as far as I know. The pics are for LHD so it would all be reversed for RHD.

I'm pretty sure that the earlier facelift XJs have the heater (edit: temperature) blend door controlled by cable rather than by a motor. When I had the dashboard out of my '98 there was certainly a cable running from the knob to the heater box. Does the knob actually rotate all the way? I once managed to wedge something in the way by mistake that stopped the gubbins inside from being able to move correctly by mistake after I'd had the stereo out.

The cable also has a join under the right hand side of the glovebox next to the transmission tunnel. I managed to break a clip on there once that disconnected the knob from the heater box. I can't remember how but I bodged it back together somehow. If this has been disconnected that would allow the knob to rotate without having any effect.


I can also vouch for the fan speed probably being the resistor - I had the exact same issue and it was a very quick, easy (and satisfying) fix. I believe I found a MOPAR resistor pack on eBay.

The blend air doors on my XJ were vacuum operated. Check all the vacuum lines for leaks.

You are correct. I didn't notice the year for some reason. The earlier slide controls do use a cable for temp. I do remember now, that mine popped off years ago. I can't remember what I did to fix it, but I'll try and get a look at it tomorrow and maybe take a pic.

Steering wheel adjustment - see picture below. On the Drag Link is a sleeve with two nuts and bolts holding it tight. WD40 these then loosen them a bit. With a Stilson wrench or similar you can turn this sleeve, it will lengthen or shorten the drag link and turn your steering wheel back to straight. Make sure you have the keys in the ignition and steering lock disengaged when doing it. In my experience you will get it right, drive it round the block and then maybe need to tweak again to get perfect.

Heater - always quoted as being the resistor that causes problems. Shoudl be write ups online, I never had problems with mine but will look in my "XJ leftovers" box and see if I have a spare set of controls in there you can have.

Door check strap thingy - odd thing to go, not tricky to change so hopefully someone on her will be breaking one or know where to get hold of a replacement cheap

Heater air temp on my XJ was low, the factory service manual states it should blow out air quite hot, like 58deg c or something, anyway my issue was the heater matrix was blocked with sediment from poor maintenance, solution grab a hose and remove both rubber pipes from the engine to the heather matrix and blast cold water through until it flows clear, initially you will get brown water, reattach hoses and let it heat up, should blow real hot hopefully.

Read another tip recently about flushing the heater core. While water is flowing through hit the fire wall with a rubber mallet. Works well apparently. I daren't do it with mine though, the leak might get worse. Can't bypass yet, what with this cold weather coming.

I spent about 9 months with a bypassed heater core and can confirm that it's not pleasant! I got used to driving with my head out of the window in the winter as I couldn't keep the windscreen ice free!

Does it have LPG? Only ask as my Xj does and the heater was poor due to the way the vaporiser was plumbed into the heater hoses. It was tee'd off the hose as opposed to being in line and I think the coolant was taking the path of least resistance through the vaporiser so the heater matrix was only getting partial flow. It was much hotter after re-piping, although I did flush the matrix at the same time.
