CJ7 V8 "Exhaust Damper"
« on: April 30, 2018, 02:37:17 PM »

I am told I may need one...

I foolishly asked why the "exhaust manifold to exhaust" studs were longer on one manifold than they are on the other, to be told that the "Exhaust Damper" goes on them.

The car did not come with one...

(said exhaust damper is £58 plus Vat by the way..).

Since I am going to get an exhaust built from the manifolds back, do I need such a "damper"?

What does it actually do? (and anybody who says "damps the exhaust" will get spammed...)

Well here's a screen grab if it shows up....

Looks like a flap/ choke thing like some bikes have to. Reduce noise and maybe influence backpressure......
And make Californians happy....

So on that note ......bin.......

But I could be wrong....l :strum:

I think it's to increase back pressure on one bank to make the crazy auto choke mechanism work, took mine off years ago with no noticeable effect...

Its a waste and dont put one back. It was used to create back pressure when the engine was cold to help it warm up for emissions.

Thanks for this guys. (some good news for once....)

I am used to the similar flap inside the actual manifold of my 6 cylinder, but that actually diverts gas against the base of the carb to warm it up in the cold... presumably useful in Nebraska, Minnesota etc.

In Birmingham, not so much.
