Driver Window
« on: June 06, 2006, 04:10:01 PM »

Stopped working all together, has been very slightly jerky for a few days now nothing.
If I press the button nothing happens but a few seconds later a get a muffled click, this is wether I press up or down.

Hopefully Thirsday I'll get the door panel off, anything to look out for taking it off and tips on what may be wrong?

All the other windows work btw.

Cheers

It'll most likely be the regulator.  It's a common problem on XJs, particularly on the drivers side for some reason.  Not sure about your Grand, but for an XJ a replacement is around £145 ex VAT.

You'll get one from a scrappy for less, but that's probably a false economy, as you'll not know what condition it's in.  Worth trying places like Lighthouse too.

Thanks for that, any hints as to where it is behind the door as the Haynes is a little vague to say the least. I'll buzz through the wiring to make sure it's all ok but what does the regulator do exactly, the name should give it away but I can't see why you'd need to regulate 12dc.
least if I know what it does I know what to expect on the outputs :)

Any little gotcha's to look out for taking the door inners off?

Window regulators; its actually the mechanical device used to raise/lower the window; regulate its motion! Either a scissor arm style with motor & gear or on lower production volumes a pulley type arrangement is sometimes used!

Sounds like it's all jammed up. The click you can hear is the thermal trip going off.

Will pop it off on saturday and see whats up.

Ok, had the panel off power appears to be getting to the motor fine, I even took a feed from the + input on the wondow controls straight to the down side of the motor connector and no movement.
The click is coming from inside the window control panel btw.
Can I assume this means the motor is screwed? if so can a new one be purchased or is it the whole regulator unit I need to buy??

Cheers

Oh while I'm in the buying bits mode, I need a knew door seal/rubber for the drivers side door opening, is that the right thing to ask for?

And lastly, is lighthouse the best place to get these bits from?

Spoke to Adam, what a nice guy :)

Picked up a motor/regulator, door rubber and a few odds and ends.

Now just have to work out how to get the old one off and the new one on :)
