Fried the aircon
« on: June 11, 2006, 12:47:52 PM »

I think I've fried the aircon.

I think it's my ignorance that's done it.

I fitted a new serpentine belt some weeks ago and on start up , just occasionally it would squeal a bit, so my train of thought" belts stretched a bit needs tightening" , so I did.

How tight does it need to be, can it be too tight? There's not much deflection on the top section.

Back to the Aircon. Had a few odd burning smells since a long hot drive on Friday. Well today, I got slight 'graunching noises' which dissappeared pretty quick and then smoke from under the bonnet !!!!! It's coming from the aircon noggin on the serpentine belt on the airfilter side. I let it cool and started the engine again, to more, worse graunching coming from the same item. I'm assuming I've overtightened the belt and stressed the aircon or somesuch.

What to do?

Where's best to get it seen to ? Jeep or any garage?

JeepClub is a Forum where you can post about things without getting insulted and having the piss taken most of the time :D   After all it is called the World Wide Web because there is life outside of the W.Midlands   :D

ANYWAY.......  I've backed the serpentine belt off a little. I think the bearings in whatever aircon part is driven by the belt are shagged, but I can't decide if its better with the aircon on or off, probably off as it'd be disengaged.

I'll try and find an aircon place in Coventry tomorrow.

Is it the condensor or a pump or ? (just so I can explain what's up)

cheers

If it's noisy with it turned off, the bearings in the clutch assembly are suspect. If it's worse when turned on, the compressor is probably toast. Oh, and if you have a '93 and you have to replace the compressor, you'll probably have to convert from R12 to R134A at the same time.

cheers Mike, it's a 2001 so is already on R134A (or should be!!)
The smell does smell like clutch burning  now you come to meantion it. The pulley spins sometime and doesn't spin others and maybe looks 'wobbly on the spindle (can't promise this as I don't know what it looked like before!)

Pretty sure there's a place that does aircon across from the arches in Spon End.

Yes Woody you are right there is life outside of the West Midlands and thats why Birtys has now become more of an international club, but you say that Jeepclub is a site without insults yet you come on and basically insult the people of the West Midlands.......i would say that is definately hypocritical.Geography has nothing to do with anything really.Birtys is about Jeeps and freedom of speech not where you live!!! I have lived both in Southampton and Lyndhurst and also worked in Portsmouth and Southsea/Christchurch area, but i still love my home town as i guess most people do,wherever it may be.If Birtys doesnt agree with you then just dont bother coming on,simple as that, thats your right, but dont slag the club  off about insults and then do it yourself,as it just isnt right really.Pot kettle black comes to mind

If I've moved to the west midlands, does that make it easier (And shorter) to get to the events :)

Not sure what the AC pump is like on a cherry, but you may be better off strippping it down and getting some new bearings... as said though, not sure how "Servicable" the AC Pump is....

Took the car to my local aircon specialist who, having listened to it and seen the oil, deemed it to be beyond economical repair. " How much for a new new one,? "..." From Jeep ? probably £1000" :D

I find it is always a good idea to try the dealers for any make.

As Ed says, sometimes they come out the cheapest.
