Oil dripping

Oil dripping from the intercooler pipe on VM Deisel in a 2000 XJ.

It's always been a bit oily, but it seems worse now, and the oil is collecting and dripping onto other bits in the engine and is also 'washing' back along underneath the engine-bay etc.

Is this a serious/common problem/feature?
