Im sortin me motor out (91 cherry) eventually to take 36"+ tractor type tyres just for offroad . . . . . . .

Now dont laugh, but i also do like the custom side of things aswell, an im after the bigest alloys i can find, to take ultra low profiles, not bothered about condition as they'll be powder coated . . . . . . . .

now i know that u can get say 28" for such as HUMMERS however there new an cost a fortune an i dont think theyed fit anyway . . . . . am i limited to JEEP or will anything els fit from say chrysler ? ? ? . . . . .

or is there a way of altering fittings from other makes ? ? ?

Any wheel with the correct PCD and offset would be OK. Does your import have an AMC20 rear or a D35? As I have dicovered there is so much more to big tyres than just bolting them on!

Have a look in the For Sale section, there is a XJ that has 20s fitted.

Ive seen the 20s but i want a lot bigger if i can get em . . . . . .

now i'd prefare alloys however steel would do if thats my only option . . . . .

Be careful with the "tractor type tyre" as I'm pretty sure you can't use them over 30mph and also a great deal of offroad sites have banned them as they do to much damage.

Plum the easiest way to rigure out your bolt pattern is to go out with a ruler and measure.

Count how many bolts hold yer wheels on then measure the diameter of the ring of bolts. For instance a CJ has 5 bolts, the ring of bolts has a 5.5" diameter.

So when I go to buy wheels I look to see which ones are available in a 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern.

Pick your year and it'll give you wheel sizes that will fit. I know it's stateside but it'll give you an idea. Also it'll give you suggested tyre sizes too.

Wheels on an XJ are 5 on 4.5" which is 114.3mm PCD in metric IIRC.

If you are going to fit 36" tyres you are going to need serious lift, even with trimming, about 6 inches as a minimum. That should mean you have no problem fitting any size of alloy you can get your hands on.

Although you might not want to hear it you should know that most people don't consider the standard XJ axles suitable for more than 31s on rocks and 33s on muddier stuff - especially the Dana 35, even upgraded!

I'm not saying don't do it, I'd be interested to see how it goes :wink:

To fit 36" tyres you're going to have to do so much custom work on the suspension, you don't even want to think about using the stock axles if you're going to use it in anger.

What you need is the chassis off of an FSJ. Just chuck an XJ body on that.

V8........strong axles...........leaf springs..........and the possibility of a body lift. :wink:

Wow . . . thats tons of info lads however thanks very much. . . . .i have allready thought of changin the axles compleatly . . . . . just so many options

Whatever i do itll be a complete new set up underneath . . . . . higher and wider . . . . however it has got to look good on road an perform, as well as offroad . . . . . Shame about the tractor type tyres . . . . ll just have to re think . . . . . .

I know that this may sound daft, however i dont want to change it so that it doesent look like a cherry . . . . . . . cos thats why i bought it, i like the square block look. . . . . .

Nope - but very similar - Insa Turbos - 265/75/16s - works out about 33/9.5s (they are a bit oversized). Should have them fitted this weekend. Sold my old Grizzleys to Disco Rich!

Hey plum, you sure about this? Your about to start down a road that you may never return from......

XJ's will habdle up to 35 inch tires and still look "stock", anything over that and you start loosing to much sheet metal to make it a proper daily driver or even a road going vehicle.

If your on a budget then look into chris's idea about sticking an xj body on a full frame. If not then look into the following:

Or you could always do Rubicon Express like me. For the lift you'd need you need to go with long arms, short arms just aint gonna cut it.

I'd build a "buggy" and keep your xj stock to pull it around.

You're making one hell of a leap from a stock truck, to something that can take 35" + tyres.

There is no way in the world that you'll be able to keep any decent road manners AND have an off road monster. More importantly, something that big offroad is going to be a real handfull if you're not used to it.

I know it may sound boring, but I'd recomend going for a medium lift (3"-4") and 31" tyres.

Get used to what that can do and then carry on from there. Either the T&T or Rustys long arm kit and an extra 1" or so of lift, then 33"s and a regear.

That way your truck will grow with you and you can stage your build without spending too much money on bits you don't need.

Took your advice on board an decided over the weekend whilst away from it all, that am going to go with sugestion . . . . . .ie 3 to 4" try it out as u said an then if i really like it (which im sure i will) ill customise it aswell (cos im like that suicide doors etc etc ) then Ill buy a new to me xj an do a "full monty" monster poss for off road only . . . . . .
