CB/ Fuse query

Good day gentlemen,

 I had a CB fitted to my truck a couple of months ago by a mate. He simply wired it into the electric seat live gubbins with `scotchlocks`, (excuse my ignorance but electric matters are not my forte) and it was working perfectly until I added a 25 amp to boost my power a bit. The inline fuse was a 2 amp and kept blowing so i replaced it with an 8 amp and it seems fine now. IS THIS SAFE?
 I don`t like the idea of my bus going on fire while im` sleeping.
 
 Any pointers appreciated.

Its a 25 Watt power amplifier, normal CB's run 4 Watts.

I would run another feed to your CB and amp and restore the electric seat feed to 2 Amps. If you had a short on the seat the 8 Amp fuse is too big to provide protection.

I would run a new feed direct from the battery with your 8 Amp fuse in-line  8)

So your amplifier draws a little over 2 amp (2.083) plus whatever the seat draws. If the cable is not sufficiently rated then you could be in trouble. Dr. Mike may know the exact spec of the cable.

Run a feed from the battery for the CB and put the 2amp fuse back in the feed to the seat.

and use a 5a on the amp :)

OR... you could

Add a BIG live into the cabin area running via a power protection relay and run all your ancili.. ancil... Extras via this... then if you do leave any on, then you should still have enough power to start your engine.

Or....

Run ONE big live into the cab into TWO Relays and have one power by ignition and one constant.... I'd still put power protection relays in both so that even if you sit there with the ignition on, you can't kill the battery. Big 50A fuse in the main line (Or more) and then fuse each feed from that as you need to. (the 50a is there for if there is ever a dead short, should be as close to the battery as possible)

OR.......

You could pay someone else to do it :twisted:

And make sure your CB has a good SWR or the AMP will damage it.

Hummm...........

Good point.  Did you check the SWR when the rig was fitted????

If not, that could be why you felt you needed the power amp in the first place.  And if you din't have a good SWR, the amp will certainly fry your CB.

Its worth bearing in mind that the amps arent strictly legal due the interferance the can cause with bleed over on radio frequencies and tv signals

I had mine wired to a plug for the cigarette lighter with an inline fuse for quick removal just incase i had to hide it

Thanks for the info guys. A new feed with an inline fuse seems the most simple route sticking he 2 amp back to the seat. Cheers    :)
