Fuel Tanks

I removed my fuel tank today so as to get the welding done.

Whilst cleaning off the near thirty years of crud, guess what, it sprung a leak!

So, am I right in saying most people will not weld tanks? Is it worth the extra $50 (at 4WD prices) to get a Polyethylene tank? Should I get a sender whilst the tank is off?

Will it ever end?
