Hello all,

My mate in the village with a v sorted TJ needs an axle spreader to help replace the bearings in his diff. been waiting on a local garage to get one for ages but to no avail. Just wondered if any of you birty's has one for a dana we could borrow for a beer or two

ratchet straps either side of the diff to the tow bar

if your going to spread your housing with a spreader make sure you have a dti measuring the amount you spread the housing, remember your are only lookng o move it a few .001"

personally I dont see the need for one, just get it square and tap it in with a soft mallet. No problem getting the desired preload.

What do other Birty's do? Do I need an axle spreader or is gently tapping a reassembled diff in ok???

If there's one out there to borrow maybe we can setup a tool exchange or a tool for beer exchange if preferred

Form what i've read and heard tapping in and prying out is the standard practice for diffs if your replacing bearing etc refitting the shims in the correct place.

I'm up for tool swapping (tools or beer) and i've just got a ball joint press and its fantastic  highly recommend

Aren't you changing your diff, I'm not sure you can just drop the new diff back in without resetting bearing pinion backlash, preload etc. cos the new diff will put the ring in a different position or are you doing that as well?

Yes, I'm fitting a Detroit and a Truetrac. I have most of the other tools needed (in/lb torque wrench, dial test indicator etc) but no axle spreader.

I'm still gathering the parts and information because I plan to take my time to do it right. I have read several install guides and articles (JP magazine website, Randy's Ring & Pinion and NAXJA) and they haven't mentioned axle spreaders but it is listed as a tool in the workshop manual for doing the job.

The axles are a Dana 30 and a Chrysler 8.25 if it makes a difference?

I have my front Diff done recently, and was meant to have the rear done too.. I said about an axle spreader to the guy doing the work and he laughed. Said that he's never used on on all the axles he's worked on and uses the "Tap in" method. Mine will be going in for the detroit after CF as you need to get 500 miles on it before using it in anger. and make sure you get the right R&P for it, I got the "Thick" one the first time and it will not fit (it does fit with the standard LSD in the read though) and had to wait for the thinner one (or standard one) for the detroit.
