Apart from the obvious which result from the shorter wheel base, roof, exhaust, chassis etc what are the differences between the CJ5 and CJ7?

I do know the doors and the body around the doors are a different shape. The 7's are a squarer shape, like YJ's.

Among other things:
Engine, transmission and transfer case options (too many to mention but don't think there was an auto);
Propshafts, rear is much shorter on the CJ5 and the front hasn't got the CV joint, therefore the ability to lift a CJ5 through the roof is limited,springs and shackles;
Axles, the CJ7 originally had the awful AMC corporate units, unless they have already been changed of course;
Seats; fuel tank, front screen, not sure if wipers were top mounted, tailgate is double thickness on a CJ7, doors (shape & sliding windows on a CJ5?);
When fitted with a 4 cyl engine some CJ5s came in a 'Short Nose' format I think;
CJ7 chassis will take a YJ tub;
CJ7 looks better - but I'm biased I shouldn't wonder!

Out of me depth now, Dr. Mike should be able to rattle off a few more differences

Not sure of that Dingo!
What about Australia and South Africa. Not sure you'd get much market penetration with the steering wheel on the wrong side, especially when they already had the tooling for the DJ5 and DJ5A delivery jeeps the US Postal Service used to use.

I believe CJs are too old for the good Doctor, this is more Bubba's specialist subject!

There's probably an almost endless list of differences between the two. from major to completely insignificant.

It would probably help if people knew why you're asking.  Is it coz you have some kind of cunning plan, or just out of curiosity? :wink:

i have a rhd cj5 1972 vintage, apparently 5s are easier to roll so look out for that mark!!
nearly everything is interchangable with a 7 except body chassie softtop etc. pre 76 5s had an unboxed chassie which isnt as strong but did have a d44 rear axle.engines were 2.5 4 cyl, 232 6 cyl 258 6cyl and 304 8 cyl there was also a rather splendid v6 in the late 60s but are somewhat rare over here(it produced 160bhp).
your entire drive train would bolt into a late 5 (76 up) without a problem, most of it would go into an early 5 but your axle spring perches would need bringing in to fit the chassie but saying that all the good internals from your front axle would fit into the 5s front axle as they are identical and you could keep the rear 44 and flog your corp 20.
