Hard Top finish
« on: November 03, 2006, 12:31:03 PM »

Anybody got any idea what I can use to replicate the factory finish on my CJ7 hard tops?
I've got one as original but it needs restoring (GRP damage) another is tastefully painted wrinkle matt white (ughh!) and another is gloss black with rusty steel vents at the back and the GRP seems to be de-laminating under the gel coat.
The original one is sorta matt black and lumpy like a mild woodchip effect.
Suggestions welcome, sensible or otherwise

I know just the finish you need, I've also got it on a sad white OEM top ('77 CJ7) how about flatting it down, then spray with polyurethane coating like 'Durabak' or similar, then overspray in the colour of choice?
Probably all have to be polyuretane based paints to prevent reactions between the materials but as I'm no painter, what would I know!

Edit 1
For what it's worth, have always thought my hard top was polycarbonate!

I'm not sure on the exact composition/makeup of hardtops as i haven't got one
However for fibreglass/GRP refurbishment; try 'Polytrol', the inner floor liner on my old speedboat was made in GRP & had a black moulded in finish; however it got pretty scratched & was slightly sun bleached; pretty much like a Black Hardtop? I bought this stuff from a chandelers & painted it on: results were amazing, I guess you coul spay it on as well!

Thanks for the advice.
I've been thinking about this and I've concluded I need to be looking at books on GRP hulled boats.
The delamination is termed "osmosis" I think, and can be cured.
I can remember reading bits of AMC marketing blurb from the time the CJ7 was launched stating it had a moulded polycarbonate hardtop, but everyone I've seen has been GRP.

Just been to look at my top where it's hanging in the garage.  Definately polycarb!
