Transmission jerking on cherokee 4 ltr 1994

Any one had any experiance of slow speed jerking from the transmission when crawling at low speeds ie in traffic, with foot on the brake and just creeping forward??
Its not a problem and not that worried about it but just wondered if its a common thing on this jeep?

you might have to explain what you mean by slow speed jerking ?

the only slow speed jerking i can think about is when you have stopped and slowly let the pressure release off the brake pedal and creep forward. you will then get a graunching sound comming from the wheels. if you let the pressure off a bit more it stops.
 this graunching sound is the disks rotating while the pads are still holding it. This is normal for all automatic vehicles from your basic level auto right up to a bentley/supercar, and all have different forms of it. Changing the pads and backings or adding release chamfers to the trailing edge or leading edge do nothing to stop it. Even different compositions of brake disk and pad material don't have an effective way of stopping it, even carbon disks still make this sound. Having non floating pads makes no difference either.
 The sounds is just inherant with all automatics.

Thanks for the reply, I should have elaborated.. The jerking is through the transmission as if it is snatching in and out of gear, not thudding but sort of pulsing. It is almost as you described, ie the letting off or the brakes, and could almost be severely distorted discs but the juddering comes from the gearbox and is like as if you were driving a manual car and the clutch was being applied and let off at approx 1 per second.
Just wondered if n e 1 had had this with jeeps before.

If the transmission oil filter hasn't been changed for a while, I'd have a look at that first. The AW4 transmission has electronic control, so have a look at the connectors on the side of the transmission while you're down there. If you still have no joy, get the controller scanned for faults. On an early XJ you'll need to find someone with access to a Chrysler DRBII or DRBII scan tool to do this.
