« on: December 06, 2006, 08:19:09 PM »

Hi newbie here

Has anyone got a old 231 J transfer box hanging about, I just need the rear end casing as mine has a nice big hole in it :!:

Can you post a photo of what you need, so that I can compare it to what I have?

I have the bit of the casing that was replaced when I upgraded from a slip yoke to a short shaft conversion on a 2004 TJ Auto.  This is the bit that surrounds the rear output shaft.

Hi Mort,

Here is my casing

I think the chap who had this motor before me didn,t keep an eye on the fluid levels ......

and this may be the result of a tight spot in the chain

My Jeep is a N plate 95 manual I cant see it fitting :?

Hi Groove Rider,

That kind of wear is typical of what happens when the chain and sprockets have worn and the chain has skipped teeth while in 4wd. It's normally associated with a big bang as the chain slips. Check the sprockets and chain for wear.

Cheers stu

I think the owner said that he never used 4wd so I suspect it seized up a bit :? ....then muggings here wants to play with the levers and ends up hearing that grumbling  , so I am going to stick it all back together and plug the hole with chemical metal and drive it in 2wd till I can get some money together after Christmas :?

I have been offered another Transfer box for £250 is that cheap?

If I'm interpreting your photo correctly, then I don't have the casing that you're looking for.  The bit I have is the casing around the output shaft, that attaches to the casing in your photo (hope that makes sense).

There's a photo of my TC with the Short Shaft Conversion fitted in my album (ignore the leak! 8)).  The bit that I have is the original casing that covered the rear output shaft prior to the SYE being fitted.

If that doesn't make sense, the I'll dig out the bit that I have when it's light and not raining, and take a photo of it.

You may be right Groove Rider - I was never formally introduced!

Here's a thought - rather than fitting an NP231, fit an NP242 from a 4.0 XJ - that would give you Full-Time 4x4 for use on the tarmac as well!

I know this has been done, but I don't have details of relative dimensions of the 231 and 242.  I seem to remember that the donor vehicle has to be of a similar age, so the the number of splines on the input shaft are the same, and that the chain set on the 242 isn't as strong as the 231.  I'm sure there must be technical write-ups on this somewhere on the Web.

I know a man who breaks XJs, and may have a 242.

Just a thought.

I think the dimensions are pretty similar - IIRC the 242 is fatter, but of similar length, but you'd need to research it.

I know someone who posts on here who did this on a diesel XJ, and the guys who fitted my SYE once fitted a 4-speed auto box, and NP242 from a 4.0 XJ into a YJ, so it can be done.

Do you have a 2.5 XJ, or a YJ?

I'm in South Oxfordshire, BTW.

Then you need to speak to PeteS.  You'll find his profile and details in the member list.

I've also had a reply from the guy I know who breaks XJs - he has a few NP242s lying around, but no 231s.

He doesn't post on here any more, so it's probably best to contact him direct re prices etc if you're interested.  Go to http://http://www.rockznrutz.com/ and ask for KD.

Cheers.
